Boardman -- The women's tennis team opened the spring season against Bowling Green in a hard-fought battle on Saturday evening at the Boardman Tennis Center. Anna Volkova and Tanisha Welch each won their matches in the third set tie-breakers, but the Falcons proved to be too difficult as Penguins fell 5-2.

Bowling Green took the early lead by winning all three of the doubles matches, 8-1, 8-1 and 8-2. The Falcons went on to claim the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles matches in straight sets.

Volkova and Welch each extended their matches to the tiebreaker sets to claim two points for the Guins. Volkova beat Samantha Kintzel 1-6, 6-4 (11) in the No.3 spot and Welch downed Katia Babina 7-5, 5-7 (12) at No. 4. Nicole Haralambopoulos lost a close match to Stefanie Menhoff by a score of 7-5, 2-6 (4) in the fifth slot.
