Volkova and Welch Pick Up Singles Wins in 5-2 loss to Pitt

     Monroeville, Pa. -- The women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of Pittsburgh at The Club at Monroeville on Wednesday. Gretchen Cloern and Sarah Lynch picked a 8-7 (4) win a doubles while Anna Volkova and Tanisha Welch won both their singles matches to earn the Penguins two points.

     Volkova beat Minh Evans 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 in the No. 2 spot and Tanisha Welch beat Christie D'Achille in convincing fashion by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Pitt won the other four matches in straight sets.

    At doubles, Cloern and Lynch won at No. 2 in the tiebreaker, but the Panthers won at No. 1 and 3 to claim the point and the 5-2 win.

    The Penguins will host Horizon League opponent Detroit at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Boardman Tennis Center.
