Women's Tennis
Hangs Tough At WVU's Martha Thorn
Invitational
Morgantown, W. Va. -- The Youngstown State women's
tennis team opened up fall competition playing in the Martha Thorn Invite at
West Virginia University. Teams who participated in the Invitational were YSU,
WVU, Duquesne and Morehead State.
Leading the way for the Penguins was
Gretchen Cloern who advanced to the
semifinals in the C Singles Flight.
Cloern won her first two matches
beating Live Petterson from West
Virginia and Brooke Helms from
Morehead State. Cloern lost to WVU's
Ashley Pilsbury in the Flight
semifinals.
Lauren Hankle, Anna Volkova and
Nicole Haralambopolous each won
their initial match of the
tournament before falling in the
next round. Both Sarah Lynch and
Tanisha Welch rebounded after
dropping their openers to win in the
consolation bracket.
In Group B Doubles action, Volkova
and Welch won their opener before
falling in the next round.
YSU returns to action Sept. 19-20
when it competes at the Bowling
Green Fall Invitational.
