Michaelis to Compete in NCAA Championships on Friday
Youngstown --
Senior Kurt Michaelis will become
the second track and field athlete
in YSU history to compete in the
NCAA Division I Championships when
he steps onto the track at the
Randal Tyson Track Center in
Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday
evening.
Michaelis will head into the weekend with the 12th fastest
mile time in the nation (4:02.71), a
school-record time he achieved at
the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 8.
The gun will sound for the preliminary round at 6:35 p.m. CST
on Friday, March 14. If
Michaelis finishes among the top 10
runners in the prelims, he will
compete in the finals on Saturday at
6:15 p.m. CST, which will be
broadcast on ESPN2 at 1:30 on
Monday. If he finishes among
the top eight Americans, he will
earn All-American honors.
"The number one goal this weekend is to make it to the
finals," Michaelis said.
"We'll see what happens after that."
Michaelis has had a dominating senior season. He is the
Horizon League Champion in the mile
and earned three-straight conference
Athlete of the Week honors. In
the opening meet of the season, he
set the top mark in YSU history in
the 1,000-meter run with a 2:28.23
and was also just .61 seconds from
provisionally qualifying for the
NCAA Championships in the 800 at the
Penn State National Open.
"This is up there
with winning the league," Michaelis
said. "They're both the
highlights of my career."
YSU's first NCAA Championship participant was Kofi
Owusu-Ansah, who placed 15th in the
200-meter dash in 2000. |
