Three Penguins Claim Individual Titles at Horizon League Championship

Sherrod Holmes, Papis Joh and Derek
Riker won individual titles as the
men's track and field team finished
fourth at the Horizon League Indoor
Championship on Sunday.
Holmes captured the 60-meter dash crown while Papis Joh won
the 200-meter dash and Derek Riker
won the pole vault.
Holmes' winning time of 7.06 seconds led a YSU sprinting
group that claimed five out of the
top eight spots in the 60 dash.
Damian Wright finished third in
7.11, Jeremiah Wright was fourth in
7.13, Dorian Chenault finished
seventh and Chris Goffer finished
eighth.
Joh edged out Loyola's Chad Tredway by five-hundredths of a second
in the 200 for the title. T.J.
Peterson finished fourth in the
event with a time of 22.75 while
Scott Weiser finished fifth in
23.13.
Joh added a third-place finish in the 400 with a time of
49.54 while Weiser placed sixth in
50.95.
Adam Lewis set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with
a second-place time of 8.56 while
Goffer finished fourth in 8.83.
YSU's 4x400-meter relay team finished third while the
distance medley relay group placed
fourth.
In the field events, Riker won the pole vault by almost six
inches with his mark of 14 feet, 11
inches. Peterson finished
third in the long jump with a leap
of 22-0 3/4 while Goffer placed
eighth. Justin Reams added a
sixth-place finish in the triple
jump with a distance of 43-7 1/4.
Jarrod Davis placed second in the shot put to head the
throwing corps with a heave of 49-7
1/4. Drew Weizer finished
third in the weight throw with a
mark of 48-3 1/2 and eighth in the
shot with a toss of 41-7. Joe
Bruderly finished fifth in the shot
put with a mark of 45-3 1/2 and
fifth in the weight throw with a
heave of 47-0 3/4.
UW-Milwaukee won the men's title with a score of 143 while
Butler finished second with a tally
of 135. Loyola finished third with
110, YSU was fourth with 100.33, UIC
was fifth with 26 and Detroit was
sixth with 12.66. |
