Davis Sets Weight Throw Record, Again
Kent, Ohio -- Junior Jarrod Davis
set the school record in the weight
throw for the second straight week
as the Youngstown State track and
field teams competed in their final
meet before the conference
championship on Saturday at the Kent
State Tune-Up.
Davis' hurl of 54 feet, 10 1/4 inches topped his
previous mark by 5 1/2 inches and
earned him fifth place in the event.
The Penguins had an impressive day overall as nearly 20
personal-best marks were set.
Following Davis' lead, Drew Weizer, Joe Bruderly and Mike
DeToro each had personal-bests in
the weight throw. Weizer threw
49-9 to finish ninth while Bruderly
had a 10th-place toss of 48-10.
DeToro finished 27th with a throw of
38-8 3/4.
On the women's side, Katy Williams had a personal-best toss
in the weight throw with a heave of
49-3 3/4 to finish seventh.
Amy Hill finished fifth in the shot
put with a throw of 42-0 3/4 while
Lindsey Hill placed 10th with a
throw of 39-7.
Emily Schnitkey finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a
season-best time of 2 minutes, 17.38
seconds to lead the distance group.
Kim Jendre finished fifth in the
1,000 with a 3:17.29 while Gina
Mavrikis chipped in with a
personal-best 2:23.40 in the 800.
Aaliyah Gillespie finished third in the 55 hurdles with a
time of 8.27 to highlight the sprint
events. Alex Casi finished
fourth in the long jump with a leap
of 17-6 1/4 while Nikki Hooper
finished seventh in the long jump
and eighth in the triple jump with
personal-bests in both events.
Sherod Holmes finished seventh in the 55 dash in a
personal-best time of 6.52 to pace
the sprinters on the men's side.
Jeremiah Wright and Damian Wright
tied for the 10th spot in the same
event with times of 6.64.
Papis Joh added an eighth-place
finish in the 200 with a time of
22.26.
Tyler Morton finished eighth in the 55 hurdles in a
personal-best 7.85 while Adam Lewis
placed 14th with a personal-best
8.01.
In the field events, Justin Reams finished fourth in the long
jump with a leap of 21-11 1/2 while
T.J. Peterson finished eighth.
Derek Riker finished seventh in the
pole vault with a vault of 14-11.
In the distance
events, Nick Buzek, Chris Hine and
Dave Mealy ran personal-best times
in the mile. Buzek's time of
4:19.27 earned him 11th place while
Hine placed 26th in 4:27.27 and
Mealy finished 51st in 4:37.95.
The Penguins will compete in the Horizon League Championship
Feb. 28-29. The men captured
YSU's first Horizon League
Championship last season and will
look to defend their crown while the
women will look to claim their own
