Men's Track Preview: Penguins Hoping Young Squad Will Develop in 2005
Youngstown --
The Youngstown State men's track and field team will
focus on individual improvement and
the development of underclassmen
this season as it competes in a very
competitive Horizon League.
The Penguins are looking to redshirt between six and eight
athletes and allow the recruit class
to get a year of valuable experience
to prepare for a championship run in
2006.
Sophomore Scott Weiser will be the lone returnee in the
sprints and will be joined by
freshmen Scott Streiner and Jason
Greenamyer. Weiser is the
school-record holder in the outdoor
400-meters and was part of two
Horizon League Champion relays at
the 2004 Horizon League Outdoor
Championship. Streiner, a Poland
native, will carry the load in the
short sprints while Greenamyer will
compete in the sprints, hurdles and
jumps.
The middle distance squad is a young group, but comes with
impressive credentials. Junior Ryan
Petrick will be joined by former
state champions Tyler Barga and John
Shepperd and freshman R.D.
Goodright. The distance group is
YSU's most experienced area with
seniors Jeremy Riehm and Matt
Paullin and junior Nick Smith. Riehm
recently ran the sixth-fastest
5,000-meters time in school history
and, along with Paullin, has stepped
up his training to make a run at
breaking school records. Smith, the
school-record holder in the
3,000-meters, is almost fully
recovered from a long injury stint
and is set to make a late season
charge.
Freshman Kyle Dalton, a Leavittsburg native, has already
posted the third-best mark in school
history in the high jump at 6 feet,
4 inches and will look to be a
strong competitor at the conference
meet. Derek Riker will look to
defend his indoor title in the pole
vault and improve upon his
second-place finish in the event in
the outdoor season.
The throws group will feature sophomore record-holder Drew
Weizer and a group of four freshmen.
Weizer broke the school record in
the weight throw with a mark of 55-9
at Robert Morris on Jan. 30 and was
named the Horizon League Athlete of
the Week for his efforts. Freshman
Nick Rodland is currently the
squad's top competitor in the shot
put and ranks seventh all-time in
the event while classmate Kevin
Steele ranks eighth. Donny Hull
currently occupies the ninth spot in
the shot put while Joe Lahmon
ranks fifth all-time in the weight
throw. |
