Women Win Horizon League Indoor
Track Title, Again
Greencastle, Ind. -- The Youngstown State women's track and
field team turned in a dominating
performance to win by 62 points and
capture its second indoor conference
championship in as many years and
its third straight title overall
this weekend at DePauw University.
The Penguins also dominated the individual awards as senior
Jeanna Cunningham was named track
performer of the meet and freshman
Carly Youlton was named field
performer of the meet. Freshman
Bethany Anderson was named the
league's field newcomer of the year.
Head Coach Brian Gorby also accepted
the Women's Coach of the Year award
on behalf of the entire coaching
staff.
"This championship is a credit to the seniors and all the
coaches who have done a tremendous
job," Gorby said. "It’s a team
effort and we’ve set the tone for
hopefully many more to come."
"The key for the entire meet was everybody stepping up. It
was a great learning experience for
the freshman and that senior
leadership, the nucleus of the team,
of course got it done for us. Every
year we talk about seniors stepping
it up and they did that today."
Cunningham blew away the competition in the the 400-meters
with a first-place time of 56.59
seconds to win by nearly two
seconds. The Warren, Ohio, native
added second-place finishes in the
60-meter dash (7.73) and the 200
(25.17) anchored YSU's 4x400 relay
that took first.
Youlton took top honors in two events with a leap of 18 feet,
4 1/4 inches in the long jump and a
mark of 36-5 3/4 in the triple jump.
Anderson set Horizon League and YSU
records in the shot put with a heave
of 47-7 1/4 and also set the school
mark in the weight throw with a toss
of 55-8 1/2.
YSU was dominant in the sprints and hurdles as the Penguins
took top honors in four events and
set three conference records.
Sophomore Danielle Bolt set two
conference records with a
first-place time of 7.52 in the 60
dash and a 24.94 in the 200. Senior
Aaliyah Gillespie set the conference
record in the 60-meter hurdles with
a first-place time of 8.68 seconds
and was part of the winning relay.
She also placed fourth in the 60
dash (7.80) and fifth in the 200
(26.11). Freshman Emily Wollet, who
ran the third leg of the winning
relay, added a fourth-place finish
with a time of 59.32 in the 400
while Cassandra Smith placed fifth
in the 60 hurdles in 9.42. Yandeh
Joh ran the first leg of the winning
relay.
Senior Emily Schnitkey paced the Penguins in the distance
events with a third-place finish in
the 1,000 in 2:59 .73 and a
third-place spot in the mile in
5:03.99. Sophomore Marielle Glanz
added a third-place finish in the
800 with a time of 2:16.07.
In the jumps, Joh placed second in the long jump with a mark
of 17-8 1/4 and Nikki Hooper was
second in the triple jump with a
mark of 36-0 1/4. Estee Rogers added
a sixth-place showing in the high
jump with a mark of 4-9 3/4.
Junior Katy Williams placed fourth in the weight throw with a
mark of 53-5 1/2 while Lindsey Hill
placed fourth in the shot put with a
heave of 44-0 1/2. Amy Hill added a
sixth-place finish in the weight
throw with a toss of 47-3. |
