Local Athletes Shine in Season Opener at Kent State
Kent, Ohio -- Freshman Katie Betts
won the 200-meter dash and placed
second in the 60m dash as local
freshman track and field athletes
highlighted Youngstown State's
season opening meet at the Kent
State Golden Flash Gala.
With her first-place time of 25.56, Betts, a Lakeview High
graduate, moved into the third spot
in YSU's all-time list in the 200m,
and her time of 7.89 in the 60m
ranks her fourth all-time.
Betts wasn't the only local athlete to have a standout opener
as Canfield High graduate Stephanie
Jarvis broke the school record in
the pole vault with a ninth-place
mark of 10 feet, 3/4 inches.
Maplewood High graduate Jen Grayson
finished third in the high jump (5-1
3/4) and seventh in the 60m hurdles
(9.23). Her marks rank her third
all-time in the hurdles and sixth in
the high jump.
Freshman Aaron Merrill of Leetonia High finished sixth in the
shot put (49-9) and moved into the
second spot on YSU's all-time list
in the event.
Senior Jarrod Davis also made an immediate impact in his
first meet coming off a redshirt
year by breaking the school record
in the weight throw with a
fourth-place toss of 61-5 1/2.
Sophomore Bethany Anderson improved
her own school record in the weight
throw with a third-place mark of
57-0 1/4.
Also on the women's side, freshman Darcelle Formby placed
second in the 200m (25.92) and fifth
in the 60m (7.99) and senior Gina
Mavrikis placed second in the 1,000m
(3:10.02). Sophomore Carly Youlton
finished third in the triple jump
(36-9 1/2) and fourth in the long
jump (16-11 1/2), and Madelyn McGhee
and Amy Moore finished fourth and
fifth in the 1,000m. Amy Hill placed
ninth in the shot put while Katy
Williams was ninth in the weight
throw. Emily Wollet added a
ninth-place finish in the 400m.
For the men, sophomore R.D. Goodright placed second in the
1,000m (2:33.99) while John Sheppard
finished fifth in the event
(2:37.51). In other track events,
Scott Streiner placed fourth in the
200m (22.46), Nick Kruse was fifth
in the 3,000m (8:59.43) and Adam
Lewis finished fifth in the 60m
hurdles (8.82). In the high jump,
freshman Martin Vieth finished fifth
(6-3 1/4) and freshman Michael Perri
finished eighth (6-2 1/4). Drew
Weizer added a ninth-place finish in
the weight throw (55-9 3/4).
The Penguins will compete at Robert Morris on Jan. 19. |
