Davis, Anderson Pace Strong Throws Effort; Teams in Second
    Kent, Ohio -- Youngstown State claimed the first four spots in the women's weight throw and the top three places in the men's weight throw behind Jarrod Davis's record-setting mark at the first day of the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
    Davis broke the league record by nearly six feet with a mark of 62 feet, 4 1/2 inches to lead the men's attack. Bethany Anderson headed the women's contingent with a school-record mark of 58-4 3/4.
    The women's squad, which has won the last two indoor titles and four straight championships overall, currently sits in second place behind UW-Milwaukee's 75 points with 54 points. The men are also sitting second with 36 points while UW-Milwaukee has 49.
    "Going into tomorrow, it's basically who wants it more," head coach Brian Gorby said. "The team has trained for this and we're ready to finish this tomorrow. We're hoping the crowd support will be a big plus."
    Behind Anderson, Katy Williams placed second (53-11 3/4), Amy Hill placed third (50-0 3/4) and Lindsay Cobey finished fourth (48-8 3/4). Drew Weizer placed second in the men's event with a mark of 56-5 3/4 while Joe Lahmon finished third with a heave of 54-6 1/2.
    "The weight throwers stepped up huge today," Gorby said. "We'll need another strong effort in the shot put tomorrow."
    In other finals, Yandeh Joh placed in the long jump with a mark of 17-9  1/2 while Darcelle Formby was fifth. Joh also placed second in the pentathlon with 3,436 points while Jen Grayson placed third with 3,392. Grayson's mark of 5-7 in the high jump in the pentathlon tied the school record.
    On the men's side, Shayne York finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21-6 3/4 while Dave Mealy placed fifth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:07.74. The men's distance medley relay of John Sheppard, Justin Carolyne, Harold Jones and R.D. Goodright placed third.
    In preliminary heats, Adam Lewis tied his school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.40 and has the top time going into tomorrow's finals. Jason Greenaymer sits fifth in the event with a time of 8.67. Damian Wright is the top qualifier in the 60-meter dash while Jeremiah Wright is in second and Clarence Howell is fifth. Damian Wright will join Scott Streiner in the 200m finals while Sheppard qualified fourth in the 800m and Jones qualified sixth.
    For the women, Satara Freeman has the top qualifying time in the 60m hurdles while Joh is fourth and Grayson is fifth. Danielle Bolt, Katie Betts, Formby and Ashley Oliver all qualified in the 60m dash while Betts, Bolt and Oliver qualified in the 200m.
   The men's heptathlon will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Kent State Field House. Finals in the field events will begin at noon and running finals will start at 1 p.m.
