Betts, Davis Earn Individual Honors; Teams Finish Second at League Meet
Kent, Ohio -- Youngstown State freshman Katie Betts and senior Jarrod Davis earned high individual recognition while both Penguin teams finished second at the Horizon League
Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Betts (Cortland, Ohio) was named the Running Newcomer of the Year with two individual third-place finishes and a second-place finish to her credit as the anchor of the 4x400-meter relay. Davis won the weight throw with a meet-breaking record Saturday and broke the YSU record in the shot put Sunday with a second-place mark of 53-11 1/4 to earn Outstanding Field Performer honors.
Both teams headed into today's portion of the two-day meet in second with a shot at winning, but both of UW-Milwaukee's squads came up big for the sweep. The UWM men's squad won its third-straight title while the women's team won its first title since 2003. YSU's women's team had won the previous two indoor titles and four league titles overall.
"You have to give our kids a lot of credit," YSU head coach Brian Gorby said. "I told them I couldn't be more proud of them for their effort. We had a few things go wrong on the women's side and Milwaukee's veterans stepped up."
The UW-Milwaukee women's team finished with 172 points to edge YSU's 151. Loyola finished third with 73.5, UIC was fourth with 56.5, Detroit was fifth with 47, Butler placed sixth with 44 and Wright State was seventh with 11. The Panthers scored 164 points on the men's side while YSU finished with 132. UIC finished third with 82 points, Loyola placed fourth with 76 points, Butler was fifth with 53 and Detroit placed sixth with 47 points.
Sophomore Yandeh Joh was the highest scorer of all YSU athletes with 34 points with four second-place finishes and a fifth-place finish. She was the conference runner-up in the 4x400 relay, the 400, the long jump and the pentathlon, and she added a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
Also on the women's side, Bethany Anderson swept the throws with a mark of 46-2 in the shot put Sunday after winning the weight throw with a mark of 58-4 3/4. Satara Freeman also picked up a victory in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.91.
Anderson lead a dominating throws group for YSU that racked up a total of 50 points in two events. In the weight throw, Katy Williams placed second (53-11 3/4), Amy Hill placed third (50-0 3/4) and Lindsay Cobey finished fourth (48-8 3/4). Hill finished second in the shot put (43-4 1/4) while her sister Lindsey finished fourth (42-6).
"Coach Cobey and his throwers did an awesome job," Gorby said. "We owe a big part of our success to them."
In the sprints, Danielle Bolt placed second in the 60-meter dash (7.65) and was part of the 4x400 relay with Betts, Joh and Kari Kreutzfeld. Betts added third-place finishes in the 60 (7.82) and the 200 (25.09).
Freshman Jen Grayson scored 18 points by finishing second in the high jump (5-3 3/4), third in the pentathlon (3,392 points) and fourth in the 60 hurdles (9.01). Carly Youlton was the final top-three finisher for YSU with a third-place mark of 36-10 1/4 in the triple jump.
The men's team was solid in all areas as it scored in 16 of the meet's 18 events and saw two school records fall. Senior Adam Lewis broke his own school record and won the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.31. Sophomore R.D. Goodright broke the school record and placed second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:27.70.
Damian Wright earned second-place finishes in the 60 with a time of 6.94 and the 200 with a time of 21.95. Goodright also scored 18 points with his second-place finish in the 1,000, third-place finish in the distance medley relay and fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay. John Sheppard, Justin Carolyne and Harold Jones also competed in the DMR.
Jason Greenamyer scored 15 points by finishing second in the heptathlon (4,609 points), third in the high jump (6-2 1/4) and sixth in the 60 hurdles (8.75). Michael Perri added a third-place finish in the heptathlon (3,746 points), and Nick Smith finished third in the 1,000 (2:28.12).
