Anderson Named
Horizon League Indoor Track & Field
Athlete of the Year
Indianapolis -- Youngstown
State's Bethany Anderson has been
voted the Horizon League Indoor
Track and Field Athlete of the Year
by the League's coaches, adding to
an already memorable list of
accomplishments by the junior
thrower.
Anderson, a native of Jamestown, N.Y., joins former
All-America runner Kurt Michaelis as
the only two YSU student-athletes to
earn the indoor season's top honor
in its five-year history.
"This award is such a credit to Bethany and coach (Shawn)
Cobey for all of the hard work,
passion and determination they have
shown the past three years," head
coach Brian Gorby said. "Bethany has
been such a great representative of
our program both on and off the
track."
Earlier in the year Anderson was named the Outstanding Field
Performer at the Horizon League
Championships after sweeping the
throwing events for the second
straight year. She won the shot put
for the third straight year, becoming just the third three-time winner in the event in the
league's history.
Prior to the League meet, Anderson became YSU's first
female thrower to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship by
throwing a school-record distance of
63'7" in the weight throw. With that
mark, she finished the year ranked
26th in Division I.
Anderson was also named the Horizon League Athlete of the
Week three times throughout the
year.
She was also named the Outstanding Field Performer at the
2006 outdoor championships and was
twice named the Field Newcomer of
the Year in 2005.
Butler's Scott Overall earned the men's award for the second
straight season after finishing
sixth in the mile and the NCAA
Championships. |
