Men's Track & Field: Penguins Place Third; Michaelis Named Outstanding
Performer at League Meet
Indianapolis -- Youngstown State
senior Kurt Michaelis won the
3,000-meter steeplechase and the
1,500-meter run to pace the Penguins
to a third-place finish at the 2004
Horizon League Outdoor Championship
Friday at the Michael A. Carroll
Track and Field Stadium.
The Penguins also got a lift from winning the 4x100- and
4x400-meter relay events and 26
points from junior thrower Jarrod
Davis.
Michaelis won the steeplechase in day one of the competition
Thurdsay with a mark of 9 minutes,
15.27 seconds and turned around to
win the 1,500 in 3:50.71 on Friday.
He added a seventh-place finish in
the 800-meters with a time of
2:01.93 to earn Men's Outstanding
Track Performer of the Year.
Davis shattered his own school record in the hammer with a
mark of 169 feet, 11 inches to place
second in the event. He also
placed second in the discus
(155-10), third in the javelin
(171-6) and fourth in the shot put
(46-11 1/2). His marks in the
discus and javelin were
personal-bests.
The 4x400 quartet of Scott Weiser, Papis Joh, Ryan Strzalka
and Kevin Breckenridge set the
Horizon League and YSU record with a
first-place time of 3:14.39.
Weiser teamed up with Dorian
Chenault, T.J. Peterson and Chris
Goffer to capture the victory in the
4x100.
Weiser led the way for the Penguins in the sprints with a
second-place finish in the 400-meter
dash with a school-record time of
time of 48.11 and a fifth-place
finish in the 200-meters with a time
of 22.29. Chenault placed
fourth in the 100 in 11.31 and sixth
in the 200 in 22.33 while Joh
recorded a fourth-place finish in
the 400 with a time of 48.18.
Goffer added a fifth-place finish in
the 100 with a mark of 11.50 and
Strzalka finished seventh in 11.61.
The Penguins claimed the sixth through ninth spots in the
5,000-meters as Nick Buzek headed
the pack with a time of 15:19.99.
Tony Orcena came in seventh with a
time of 15:29.92 while Chris Hine
placed eighth in 15:32.45 and Nick
Kruse placed ninth in 15:35.10.
Adam Lewis placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time
of 55.41 while Breckenridge placed
eighth with a time of 57.79.
In the field evens, Derek Riker placed second in the pole
vault by clearing a height of 14-1
1/4 while Dustin Reimond placed
fifth with a mark of 13-1 1/2.
Joe Bruderly finished third in the
shot put with a mark of 47-10,
seventh in the discus (130-5) and
seventh in the hammer (134-8).
Drew Weizer placed fifth in the
discus (136-7), seventh in the shot
put (42-2 3/4) eighth in the hammer
(129-3) and ninth in the javelin
(134-4) while Mike DeToro placed
sixth in the javelin with a mark of
154-9.
UW-Milwaukee won the championship with 187 points while
Loyola finished second with 124
points. YSU finished with 115
points to place third while Butler,
Detroit and Illinois-Chicago rounded
out the final three.
With their wins, both relay squads received an automatic bid
to compete in the NCAA Mideast
Regionals held May 28-29 in Baton
Rouge, La. Michaelis already
qualified in the steeplechase and
the 1,500 earlier in the season. |
