Michaelis Finishes 16th; Schniktey, Men's 4x400 Finish 17th at NCAA Regional
Baton Rouge, La. -- Senior Kurt Michaelis capped off his magnificent career at Youngstown State with a 16th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 24.79 seconds at the NCAA Mideast Regional Saturday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Emily Schnitkey placed 17th overall and fourth in her heat in the women's steeplechase with a time of 11:00.70 while the men's 4x400-meter relay tandem of Papis Joh, Ryan Strzalka, Adam Lewis and Scott Weiser placed 17th with a mark of 3:17.42.
While Michaelis fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championship, he has assembled one of the greatest careers of any Youngstown State athlete in history.
He became YSU's first Division I All-American as he finished ninth in the 1,500-meters at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and is the only two-time YSU Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the award's 17-year history.  He qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in five events spanning over two years and was an eight-time conference champion.  He was also named Horizon League Indoor Athlete of the Year in 2003 and Outstanding Running Performer during the 2004 outdoor season.
