Schnitkey Wins Steeplechase; Women in Third After
Day One
Indianapolis --
Youngstown State junior Emily
Schnitkey won the 3,000-meter
steeplechase with at time of
11:01.20 to highlight YSU's
performances in the first day of
competition at the Horizon League
Championship.
Schnitkey added a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 with a
time of 38:01.57 while Aaliyah
Gillespie broke her own league
record in the 100 hurdles with a
time of 14.32 second in the prelims.
The women's team is currently in third place with 36 points
behind Detroit (59) and UW-Milwaukee
(50). The men's team is in fourth
place with 16 points.
The women's squad is well within striking distance as many
sprinters qualified for finals after
high preliminary marks. Danielle
Bolt, Gillespie, Jeanna Cunningham
and Ashley Oliver all qualified for
tomorrow's finals in the 100 while
Cunningham, Bolt and Emily Wollet
qualified in the 200. Leslie Johnson
and Wollet qualified in the 400, and
Marielle Glanz qualified in the 800.
Satara Freeman and Cassandra Smith
will join Gillespie to compete in
tomorrow's final heat in the 100
hurdles.
Also scoring for the Penguins in day one, Carly Youlton
placed third in the long jump with a
mark of 5.65m and Yandeh Joh
finished fourth in the event with a
mark of 5.59m. Bethany Anderson
placed third in the hammer with a
mark of 52.39m while Amy Hill and
Katy Williams placed fifth and sixth
in the event. Laura Schatz finished
fifth in the javelin with a mark of
34.36m while Hill added a
sixth-place distance of 34.31m.
On the men's side, Joe Lahmon turned in a third-place showing
in the javelin with a mark of 49.38m
and added a fourth-place finish in
the hammer with a mark of 44.81m.
Dave Mealy finished fifth in the
10,000 with a mark of 31:34.92 while
Nick Smith placed fifth in the
steeplechase in 9:36.80. Jason
Greenamyer added a fifth-place
finish in the long jump with a mark
of 6.49m and currently sits in first
place in the decathlon. Scott
Streiner qualified for the finals in
the 100 and 200 while R.D. Goodright
qualified in the 800.
Day two of the championship will get underway Friday at 10
a.m. EST with the running of the
decathlon's 110 hurdles and will
conclude at approximately 6:10 p.m.
EST with the running of the women's
4x400-meter relay. |
