Penguins Look to Defend Outdoor Title Beginning
Today
Indianapolis --
The Youngstown State women's track
and field team will look to defend
its league title and win its
fourth-straight overall championship
when it begins competition at the
2005 Horizon League Outdoor Track
and Field Championship today at the
IUPUI Track and Soccer Stadium.
The Penguins narrowly edged UW-Milwaukee by 18 points at last
season's outdoor conference meet,
but YSU won the league's indoor
title in February by a convincing 62
points.
YSU enters the meet with an experienced sprint group that
expects to continue its recent
dominance at the championship meet.
Jeanna Cunningham, the league's
Track Performer of the Meet at the
indoor competition, ranks second in
the league and is the YSU record
holder in the 400-meters with a time
of 55.28 seconds. The junior also
ranks third in the 100 and the 200
while sophomore Danielle Bolt holds
the second-fastest time in the 100.
Senior Leslie Johnson ranks third in
the 400 while freshman Emily Wollet
holds the fifth-fastest time in the
200 and the seventh-fastest in the
400.
Emily Schnitkey, who qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional
two weeks ago at the Penn Relays,
enters with the second-fastest time
in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and
ranks eighth in the 5,000. Aaliyah
Gillespie holds the top incoming
time in the 100 hurdles with a
school-record time of 14.22 while
Satara Freeman ranks second with a
time of 14.31. YSU's 4x100 relay
also ranks first coming into the
meet while the 4x400 quartet ranks
second.
In the jumps, Laura Schatz holds the second-best mark in the
high jump while Yandeh Joh ranks
second in the long jump. Carly
Youlton ranks third in the triple
jump and sixth in the long jump
while Nikki Hooper ranks fifth in
the triple.
Freshman Bethany Anderson enters the meet with the top rank
in the shot put by 2 1/2 feet and
also holds the school record in the
event with a mark of 45-10 3/4.
Anderson also ranks third in the
hammer while Katy Williams holds the
third-best distance in the discus.
Amy Hill ranks fourth coming into
the meet in the javelin, discus and
hammer and ranks fifth in the shot
put.
On the men's side, Jason Greenamyer ranks in the top 10 in
seven events, including ranking
second in the decathlon. Nick Smith
enters ranked third in the
steeplechase while Joe Lahmon is
ranked third in the hammer, fourth
in the javelin and seventh in the
discus. Nick Rodland ranks third in
the shot put and Kyle Dalton ranks
third in the high jump. Scott
Streiner enters with the fifth-best
time in the 200 and Scott Weiser
ranks sixth in the 400. |
