Aaron Merrill Places 13th at USA Junior Track Championship
Indianapolis -- Youngstown State
freshman Aaron Merrill placed 13th
in the shot put at the
2006 Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field
Championships last week.
Merrill, who hails from Leetonia, Ohio, broke his own school
record with a mark of 53-feet, 11
1/4 inches in the event, which
featured the top throwers aged 14-19
in the country. He joined YSU's
Katie Betts in becoming the first
two athletes to compete at the
national meet since 2002.
John Hickey from the University of Iowa won the event with a
mark of 63-3 1/4.
Merrill was named the Horizon League's Field Newcomer of the
Year at the outdoor championship by
winning the shot put. His mark of
53-10 1/4 eclipsed the USA
qualifying mark of 52-11 3/4. The
freshman also placed sixth in the
hammer and seventh in the discus at
the outdoor meet, and he placed
third in the shot put during the
indoor season. |
