Davis, Merrill Earn Individual Honors; Penguins
Place Second at HLC

Senior Jarrod Davis was named
Outstanding Field Performer and
Aaron Merrill was named Field
Newcomer of the Year as the
Youngstown State men's track and
field squad placed second at the
Horizon League Championship on
Saturday.
Davis set YSU and Horizon League records in the hammer with a
mark of 191 feet, 2 inches and took
the top spot in the javelin with a
throw of 175-5. Merrill, a Leetonia
native, won the shot put with a
school-record mark of 53-10 1/4.
UW-Milwaukee claimed the team title with a score of 254 while
Youngstown State finished with 182
and UIC had 100 in third.
Derek Riker won the pole vault with a mark of 15-5, and Marty
Vieth was victorious in the high
jump with a mark of 6-3 1/4.
Joe Lahmon placed second behind Davis in the hammer with a
mark of 166-8 and third in the
javelin with a mark of 168-9. Davis
finished third in the discus with a
mark of 140-9, and Drew Weizer
finished fourth with a mark of
158-7.
In the sprints, Poland native Scott Streiner placed second in
the 200m with a time of 21.99 and
second in the 400m with a time of
49.68. Jeremiah Wright placed third
with a time of 10.99 and Damian
Wright finished one one-hundredth of
a second slower in fourth.
Justin Carolyne finished second with a time of 55.95 in the
400m hurdles, and Adam Lewis
finished third in the 100m hurdles
with a time of 15.42.
Seniors Dave Mealy and Nick Smith both posted second-place
finishes to pace the distance group.
Mealy ran a time of 31:29.14 in the
10,000m to finish nine seconds
behind the winner, and Smith was
seven-and-a-half seconds back in the
steeplechase. J.D. Sheppard placed
fourth in the 800m with a time of
1:55.03, and R.D. Goodright was
fifth in 1:56.25. Goodright also
turned in a fourth-place finish in
the 1,500m with a time of 3:59.71,
and Nick Kruse finished fifth with a
time of 4:00.26. Mealy added a
fifth-place finish in the 5,000m
with a time of 15:07.64.
In the jumps, Mike Perri finished third in the high jump with
a mark of 5-10 3/4, and Shayne York
placed fourth in the triple jump
with a mark of 44-9.
All event winners are eligible to compete at the NCAA Mideast
Regional, which will begin May 26 at
the University of Tennessee. |
