Twelve Track Athletes Set to Compete at NCAA Mideast Regional
    Knoxville, Tenn. -- Twelve Horizon League Champions will represent the Youngstown State track and field program at the NCAA Mideast Regional beginning today at the University of Tennessee.
    The group of six sprinters and six field performers is the most to ever compete at the regional in school history, and Jarrod Davis is the first YSU thrower to qualify for the Regional before earning the conference crown.
    Davis enters the meet ranked 17th in the hammer with the top mark in YSU history at 191 feet, 2 inches that he threw at the Horizon League Championship two weeks ago. Davis had hit the qualifying standard of 182-5 at the All-Ohio Championship on April 8 before posting his best distance at the league meet. A native of East Canton, Ohio, Davis also won the javelin at the league meet and holds the 17th-best entering mark at 175-5.
    Freshman and Leetonia, Ohio, native Aaron Merrill earned the right to compete in the shot put by winning the event at the Horizon League Championship with a school-record mark of 53-10 1/4, which ranks him 29th entering the regional meet. Freshman Marty Vieth won the high jump title at the league meet and ranks 18th with a mark of 6-3 1/4, and senior Derek Riker enters ranked 18th in the pole vault after posting a winning mark of 15-5 at the league meet.
    Sophomore thrower Bethany Anderson earned a chance to compete in two events by winning the shot put and hammer at the Horizon League Championship two weeks ago and leads a group of eight women competing at the meet. Anderson, a native of Jamestown, N.Y. enters ranked 35th in the shot put with a mark of 45-0 1/2 and 28th in the hammer with a mark of 175-1 1/2. She will be joined by fellow thrower Katy Williams, who won the discus with a mark of 135-3 and enters ranked 24th.
    The women's sprints will be YSU's largest group competing with six different athletes taking the blocks. Danielle Bolt won the league title in the 100m dash and enters with a 38th-ranked time of 11.94 seconds and will anchor the 4x100m relay that also includes Jeanna Cunningham, Katie Betts and Yandeh Joh. Joh, Betts and Cunningham will join Kari Kreutzfeld in the 4x400m relay. Senior Satara Freeman is the final qualifier and enters ranked 31st in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.35 that earned her the top spot at the league meet.
    The top five finishers in each event at the regional earn an automatic bid to compete at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on June 7.
