Cunningham Sets 400m Record, Betts Qualifies for Junior Nationals at BW
Berea, Ohio -- Youngstown State
senior Jeanna Cunningham set the
school record in the 400-meters and
freshman Katie Betts qualified for
the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field
Championships at the Sparky Adams
Invitational.
Cunningham ran a first-place time of 54.65 to just miss the
NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying
time of 54.61 and added a
first-place time of 24.19 in the
200m. Betts' second-place time of
24.49 in the 200m hit the USA
qualifying standard of 25.54.
Betts, a native of nearby Cortland, Ohio, became the first
YSU athlete to qualify for the USA
meet since Emily Cicero qualified in
the 5,000m in 2002. The meet will be
held from June 21-25 at the Michael
A. Carroll Track
& Soccer Stadium on IUPUI's campus
in Indianapolis.
Betts added a third-place finish in the 100m at the Sparky
Adams Invite as the women's squad
took first-place overall at the
meet. YSU's men's squad tied for
second.
Carly Youlton also earned a victory in the triple jump with a
mark of 11.07m, and she added a
third-place finish in the long jump
(5.19m). Stephanie Jarvis tied her
school record in the pole vault with
a mark of 3.35m
Satara Freeman turned in third-place performances in the 100m
hurdles (14.39) and the 400m hurdles
(1:02.92). Yandeh Joh added a
fourth-place finish in the 100m
hurdles (14.85). Shantel Jackson
finished fifth in the 800m
(2:19.54), and Emily Cicero finished
fifth in the 5,000m (19:24.44).
In the throws, Bethany Anderson finished second in the hammer
(53.15m) and fourth in the shot put
(13.19m), and Katy Williams added a
fifth-place mark of 41.35m in the
discus.
On the men's side, Derek Riker won the pole vault and matched
his school record with a mark of
4.72m while Shayne York won the
triple jump with a mark of 13.42m.
York added a third-place mark of
6.50m in the long jump.
Also in the field, Aaron Merrill placed second in the shot
put with a mark of 15.92m, and
Jarrod Davis placed third in the
hammer with a mark of 56.78m.
Adam Lewis turned in a third-place time of 56.41 in the 400m
hurdles, and Dan Nemergut placed
fourth in the steeplechase with a
time of 10:18.67. Scott Streiner
placed fourth in the 400m (49.67),
and Damian Wright added a
fifth-place finish in the 100m
(10.76).
At the Penn Relays, Nick Kruse ran a personal-best time of
14:52.78 in the men's 5,000m Olympic
Development race, and Dave Mealy ran
a personal-best time of 30:46.03 in
the 10,000m to place 26th. Nick
Smith added a 16th-place time of
9:50.27 in the steeplechase, and the
4x800m relay of R.D. Goodright, J.D.
Sheppard, Harold Jones and Smith
placed 12th in 7:45.24.
The Penguins will compete
at the Campbell/Wright Open in Akron
on Friday and Saturday. |
