Penguins Set to
Begin Outdoor Season Friday at Duke
Invitational
Youngstown --
Youngstown State will open its 2007
outdoor track and field season on
Friday at the Duke Invitational with
hopes of improving on runner-up
finishes at the Horizon League
Indoor Championships in February.
The Penguins will have seven meets prior to the Horizon
League Outdoor Championships on May
10-11 in Indianapolis, Ind. Three of
those meets will be held in
Northeast Ohio and another will be
held in Cincinnati.
After the Duke Invite and a trip to the Sea Ray Relays at the
University of Tennessee, the
Penguins will compete at the
Northeast Ohio Quad meet at Akron on
April 14. YSU will also compete at
the All-Ohio Championships in
Cincinnati on April 20-21, the
Sparky Adams Invite in Berea on
April 28 and the Campbell/Wright
Open in Akron on May 4-5.
YSU's women's squad enters the season having won three
consecutive Horizon League titles.
At last season's championship meet
the Penguins outscored UW-Milwaukee
163 to 126 in the final day to win
by 11 points.
Bethany Anderson, who was recently named the Horizon League
Indoor Athlete of the Year, is one
of two specialty award winners
returning from last season's
championship squad. Anderson won the
shot put and hammer to earn
Outstanding Field Performer honors
at the 2006 conference meet.
Katie Betts also returns after earning Running Newcomer of
the Year accolades a year ago. YSU
should also get a lift from freshman
Alisha Anthony, who was named the
Field Newcomer of the Year at the
indoor league meet.
However, the women's squad will have some voids to fill from
last year's winning team with
Outstanding Running Performer
Danielle Bolt, individual event
winners Katy Williams and Satara
Freeman, and relay champion Jeanna
Cunningham missing from the roster.
The men's team finished second to UW-Milwaukee at last year's
meet and will be without Outstanding
Field Performer Jarrod Davis this
season. However, Aaron Merrill, last
season's Field Newcomer of the Year,
will return to defend his title in
the shot put. Merrill and high jump
champion Marty Vieth are the lone
returning victors.
Joe Lahmon was named the Outstanding Field Performer at this
year's indoor meet and had two
top-three finishes at the outdoor
meet in 2006. Sprinter Scott
Streiner also returns after two
runner-up finishes last season. |
