Merrill Shatters Own Shot Put Record at Red Flash Open

    Loretto, Pa. -- Junior Aaron Merrill highlighted a solid Penguin performance as he broke his previous school-record in the shot put on Saturday by throwing a distance of 17.70m at the Saint Francis Red Flash Open.

    Merrill won the event at the meet and topped his previous best mark by .04m that he set in April of 2008.

    Sophomore Danielle Curry, who owns the school record in the shot put on the women's side, tied her record by throwing a first-place mark of 14.17m Curry broke the school record just one week prior.

    The Penguins also had many other top performances in both track and field events on Saturday.

    For the men, senior Antonio Quarterman finished in second in the triple-jump with a distance of 14.26m and fourth in the jong jump with a distance of 6.60m. With those marks, Quarterman ranks second in school-history in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump.

    Senior Joe Lahmon added a first place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.39m and a fifth place finish in the discus with a throw of 44.66m. Sophomore John Pallini also finished fourth in the shot put, throwing a distance of 15.91m to tie third all-time in school history.

    On the women's side, junior Alexis Hall threw a personal-best distance of 51.79m to finish in second in the hammer throw. The mark is also good for second all-time in YSU history.

    Sophomore Breanne Romeo had a personal-best time in the 200m after running a 25.25 to finish in second place. Kari Kreutzfeld finished one spot behind in third in the 200m with a time of 25.45.

     Senior Yandeh Joh tacked on a second place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.96. Freshamn Jocelyn Steiner ran a personal-best time of 12:48.90 in the 3,000m steeplechase to finish in fourth. The time also ranks sixth in school history.

    The women's combination of Romeo, Joh, senior Katie Betts and sophomore Alisha Anthony added a second place finish in the 4x100m with a time of 47.94.

    The Penguins are off until Thursday, when they travel to Chicago to take part in the Horizon League Outdoor Championships. The women's squad will look to defend their outdoor title, while the men will look to overcome their second-place finish from a year ago.
