Six State Champions Highlight 2005-06 Track Recruit Class
    Youngstown --
Six state champions and nine student-athletes from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties highlight Youngstown State's 2005-06 track and field recruiting class, head coach Brian Gorby announced.
Four former state champions, including South Range High's Dan Nemergut, will join the men's squad while 10-time All-Ohioan Jen Grayson from Maplewood High and Kari Kreutzfeld of Port Clinton High headline the women's class.
Nemergut captured the individual crown at the 2004 Division III OHSAA State Cross Country Championships in November with a first-place time of 16:13. He was also the runner-up at the state meet as a junior and placed second in the state in the 3,200-meters as a senior.
Jeff Dobbins of Wadsworth High, Harold Jones of Wyoming High and Chillicothe Unioto High's Michael Perri will also enter as former state champions. Dobbins won the state title in the pole vault during the indoor season with a mark of 15 feet and was ranked 34th nationally in the event. Jones, a Cincinnati native, won the 800 at State as a junior and finished as the runner-up in the event as a senior. He was also ranked 15th nationally as a senior in the indoor 800. Perri won the indoor state championship in the high jump with a mark of 6-6 and ranked 38th nationally.
Local standout Aaron Merrill of Leetonia also joins the class. Merrill finished second in the state in the shot put and eighth in the discus as a senior after placing fifth in the shot and seventh in the discus as a junior. As a senior, he set the Tri-County League record in the shot put with a mark of 60-3, a mark that ranked 23rd nationally. He was also the TCL champion in the shot three straight years.
State runner-up in the indoor pole vault Corey Schreck (Wadsworth High) and high jump All-Ohioan Martin Vieth (Oregon Clay High) complete the class.
Grayson, who signed early with YSU in November, garnered All-Ohio honors in the 300 hurdles, 100 hurdles and high jump as a senior after winning the high jump as a junior. Her personal-best mark of 5-7 1/4 in the high jump as a junor ranked 57th nationally and would break both of YSU's current high jump records. Kreutzfeld also earned a State title in the indoor 200 and was on Port Clinton's 4x100 relay that placed second in the state and the fifth-place 4x200 relay.
Joining Grayson from the area are Canfield's Stephanie Jarvis and Newton Falls' Jacquline Clonch. Jarvis also signed in November and will enter with a personal-best mark in the pole vault that is two feet higher than the YSU record. She finished seventh in the state as a junior and broke the meet record at the Division I Youngstown Districts with a first-place mark of 10-7.
