Contract
- Even after suffering its second
straight losing campaign, President
Howard Jones announces three day
prior to the season finale against
Mount Union, the renewal of Coach
Beede’s contract for the next three
years. It would turn into a 21-year
contract as Beede would stay until
the 1972 season.
1952 (4-3-1)
Fast Start
- The Penguins sweep through their
first five games of the season
undefeated winning four and tying
one. However, they feel by the
wayside as they dropped their final
three games of the season getting
outscored 114-21 while being shut
out twice during that time.
1953 (7-1)
Beede Milestone-
The penguins defeat LaCrosse
Teacher’s College 39-13 to give
Coach Beede his 100th
head coaching career win (he has 28
at Geneva College, this being his
72nd at Youngstown.
Near Perfect
- Only a surprising 10-7 loss at the
hands of Waynesburg in the fourth
week of the season stands in the way
of a perfect slate for the Penguins
1954 (7-2)
“Lucky Seven”- For the fifth
time in their short 14-year
existence, the Penguins as a team
post seven victories for the year.
Garcar Honored
- Penguin tackle Bob Garcar is named
to the Associated Press
All-Midwestern team.
1955 (5-5)
“Unlucky Four” -
After three successive winning
campaigns, the Penguins fall below
.500 (4-5-0)…The sixth time they
have posted four wins in their brief
15-year history, three of those
times they have had winning slates
while the other three have been
during losing campaigns.
1956 (4-4)
Rushing Record
- The seventh time four wins have
been posted in a particular
campaign…Halfback Davey Kimmel set
the Penguins’ single-season rushing
records as he raced to 940 yards in
eight contests, an average of 117.5
yards in every game that he played.
1957 (3-6)
Opponent Tops
- North Texas State blasts
Youngstown 68-13 to gain a spot in
the Penguin record book for most
points scored against the Penguins,
a record that still stands today.
1958 (4-4)
All-Time Low
- The Penguin offense sputters as
opponents hold the Penguins to a
high of just 20 points in four
different games and a total of just
114 points on the season; an average
of just 14.3 points per contest…This
is the only time a Penguin team
never exceeded more than twenty
points in any one game during a
single season of play…A 4-4 ledger
is all the school can produce.
1959 (5-4-1)
“A Passing Star”-
Harold Green, Penguin quarterback,
breaks every school passing mark,
including most touchdown passes and
best completion percentage. He
throws for 1,254 yards on 81 of 187
aerials. |
