The first football coach for the Penguins, he posted a 147-118-14 overall
record in 32 years at the helm. The inventor of the penalty flag and innovator of the face
mask, he was one of the most respected names on the field and off where he was a biology
teacher at YSU. In honor of his accomplishments, the football field at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium
was named for him- Dwight “Dike” Beede Field. He also had a stint as basketball coach during
the 1941-42 season.
