Ten Home Matches Await as Guins Release 2009

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team will play four
first-time opponents and have 10 home matches to highlight its challenging 2009 schedule, head
coach Joe Bonner announced.
The Penguins will open the season Aug. 28 with three matches at Maryland,
and they will host Butler to start the Horizon League schedule on Sept. 17. Seven of YSU's
opponents won at least 19 matches last season. Release

-- Many individuals showed
improvement throughout the spring as
the Youngstown State volleyball team
competed in four tournaments during
the semester.
As a team, the Penguins went 18-14 in sets in tournaments at
Eastern Michigan, Kent State,
Duquesne and Cincinnati.

-- A setter, an outside hitter
and a middle blocker have signed a
National Letter of Intent to
continue their academic and
volleyball careers at Youngstown
State University, YSU head
volleyball coach Joe Bonner
announced.
Angie Roidt, Suzanne Lassiegne and Martina Davis will all join the
Penguins’ for the 2009 season.

Flames Rally Twice, Hold on For Five-Set Win to Eliminate Guins |

Cleveland -- No. 8 UIC rallied
late in two sets and used a big run in the deciding fifth set to eliminate
ninth-seeded Youngstown State in the first round of the Horizon League
Volleyball Championship on Thursday evening.
The Flames scored the seven final points in the first set (20-25),
took six of the final seven in the third set (25-21) and went on a 10-3 run to
close out the final set (15-10). Release

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Ebony Barbosa
had her fourth straight double-double, and fellow senior Karla Everhart had six
kills and 34 assists as the pair played their final home match against Cleveland
State on Friday evening.
Barbosa finished with 13 kills and 13 digs and scored a
match-high 15.5 points as the Penguins fell in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 14-25,
