Penguins Gear Up For Busy Week at
Ohio State, KSU Invite
After setting the school mark for
most consecutive wins to start a
season, the Youngstown State
volleyball team (5-2) prepares for a
busy and challenging week when it
takes on nationally-ranked Ohio
State, Tuesday, Sept. 4. The
Penguins also play three matches in
two days at the Kent State Golden
Flash Invitational, Sept. 7-8, in
Kent, Ohio.
The Penguins face Kent State,
Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. and take
on Binghamton and Canisius,
Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. and 3
p.m., respectively.
The 20th-ranked Buckeyes enter the
week with a 4-1 record after
splitting a pair of matches at the
Coors Classic in Fort Collins,
Colo., last week.
Ohio State fell to Colorado State,
22-30, 25-30, 21-30, but defeated
Pacific, 30-22, 30-21, 33-31.
All-American Danielle Meyer leads
the Buckeyes with 4.53 kills per
game while Brianna McCarthy cranks
out 3.93 kills per game with a .387
hitting percentage.
Kent State enters its own tournament
with a perfect 7-0 mark after
winning three matches at the William
and Mary Classic.
The Golden Flashes defeated Southern
Illinois, 3-0, William and Mary,
3-1, and East Carolina, 3-1.
Binghamton is currently 3-4 heading
into this weekend. The Bearcats lost
a five-game contest to Horizon
League foe Valparaiso and were swept
by Milwaukee last Saturday before
defeating St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-0,
on Sunday.
Michelle McDonough leads the
Bearcats with 2.75 kills per game
while Ashley Allen ranks second on
the squad with 2.54 kills per game.
Canisius enters the weekend with a
1-6 record after falling to Fordham,
3-2, and West Virginia, 3-2, last
weekend. The Golden Griffs picked up
their first victory of the season
with a 3-0 win over St. Francis
(N.Y.) last weekend.
Michelle Doma leads Canisius with
2.92 kills per game and a .389
hitting percentage. Renee Lettow is
second on the squad with 2.25 kills
per game.

play next week when they visit
Butler, Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.
and Wright State, Saturday, Sept.
15, at 2 p.m.
‘Guins Set Mark For Best
Start
Although they have lost their last
two matches, the Penguins set a
school mark for most consecutive
wins to start a season with five
after defeating UNC-Greensboro, 3-1,
last Friday.
Boscaljon Likes Double-Dippin’
In 39 career matches played,
sophomore Ruth Boscaljon has posted
double figures in kills 21 times and
has tallied at least 20 kills five
times after posting 20 against
Robert Morris.
Everhart Continues to Climb
Junior setter Karla Everhart moved
into sixth place on the all-time YSU
assist list with 1,415 career
assists. She dished out 105 last
weekend. She needs 585 more to
become the fifth player to net 2,000
assists in a career and 762 more to
move into fifth place on the
all-time list.
Boscaljon Nearing 500
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon took just
36 career matches to reach the 400
kills mark and is now approaching
the 500 mark. With 34 kills over the
weekend, Boscaljon pushed her career
total to 444 kills and needs 56 more
to reach 500.
Drost D’s It Up
Freshman Abigail Drost reached in
digs in each match in YSU’s 1-2
week. Besides averaging 2.45 kills
per game, Drost recorded 49 digs,
including a career-high 22 digs
against North Dakota State. She
tallied 15 digs against UNC-Greensboro
and 12 against Robert Morris. She
also recorded five blocks during the
weekend.
Fraley, Drost Pick Up Honors
Youngstown State senior Jessica
Fraley and freshman Abigail Drost
were named to the Temple
Invitational All-Tournament Team
after leading the Penguins to a 4-0
record over the first weekend.
Fraley averaged 3.19 kills per game,
1.44 digs per game and 0.81 blocks
per game while hitting at a .273
clip. Fraley recorded a
double-double with 13 kills and 13
digs against LaSalle, 17 kills with
a .433 hitting percentage against
Lehigh, eight kills and a .438
hitting percentage against Rider and
13 kills against Temple.
Drost averaged 2.31 kills and 3.62
digs per game. She posted a
double-double with 12 kills and 13
digs against Lehigh and just missed
double-doubles with nine kills and
19 digs against LaSalle and nine
kills and 12 digs against Temple.
Drost also collected 14 digs in a
three-game sweep of Rider.
Leslie Nabs Career High
Sophomore Dana Leslie played a major
role in the Penguins’ 4-0 start last
week. Leslie averaged 5.75 digs per
game, including a career-high 29
against LaSalle in the season
opener. Against Rider, Leslie posted
17 digs. |
