Seniors Have
Strong Showing in Final Match at
Beeghly
Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Ebony Barbosa
had her fourth straight double-double, and fellow senior Karla Everhart had six
kills and 34 assists as the pair played their final home match against Cleveland
State on Friday evening.
Barbosa finished with 13 kills and 13 digs and scored a
match-high 15.5 points as the Penguins fell in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 14-25,
22-25).
Kaitlin O'Hara added 12 kills for YSU, which concludes the
regular season at 11-16 and a 4-12 ledger in Horizon League contests.
Liz Fazio had 13 kills as one of five players to finish with
at least nine kills for the Vikings, who finished 8-18 and 7-9.
Both teams will compete at the Horizon League Volleyball
Championship next week in Cleveland. YSU will play on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Barbosa connected on seven of her eight attempts in the first
set as the Penguins hit .333 as a squad. YSU battled through 10 ties and three
lead changes and trailed 21-20. Jordan Goad's service error allowed YSU to tie
the score, and the Penguins went on to score four straight points to go up
24-21. Cleveland State got the side out on Amy Benz's kill, but another service
error gave YSU the set.
The Penguins looked poised to take a 2-0 lead as they jumped
out to a 9-4 advantage in the second set. The Vikings had five kills in the next
six points and took a 10-9 lead. YSU was not able to regain the lead but tied
the score five more times, including 19-19. CSU went on to score six of the
final seven points to win 25-20.
YSU also led 6-3 in the third set before Cleveland State went
on a 13-4 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Penguins closed to 16-13, but the
Vikings scored nine of the final 10 points to win 25-14. CSU had five of its 10
blocks in the third set.
The fourth set featured 15 ties and eight lead changes, but
neither team led by more than three until Cleveland State went ahead 23-20. YSU
scored the next two points to cut the margin to 23-22, but Cleveland State
scored the final two points to win the match.
YSU finished with 12 blocks, including six by Ruth Boscaljon.
Benz finished with eight block assists for Cleveland State.
Seedings, pairings and match times will be announced by the
Horizon League on Sunday. |
