Reid's Career Night Goes For Naught as Penguins Fall to UIC

Youngstown -- Tasha Reid's career-high 13 kills were offset by four UIC players posting double-digit kill totals as the Flames defeated Youngstown State in four sets in the Horizon League opener for both teams.
Reid, a redshirt freshman opposite side hitter, had 13 kills against four errors in 30 attempts. Ebony Barbosa added a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Barbosa connected on 11 of 25 targets and did not have an error.
UIC hit .293 for the match while YSU was held to a .212 total. The Flames avoided the YSU' block all match as the Penguins registered a season-low three.
Katerina Hanackova had a match-high 17 kills for the Flames while Katarina Nedeljkovic had 14 kills and 14 digs.
Senior Karla Everhart had 19 kills for the Penguins, and freshman libero Amanda Gray had 11.
YSU led just twice early in the first set before UIC went on a 12-1 run that gave it a 15-4 lead. The Flames hit .500 in the set en route to a 25-15 victory.
The Penguins trailed by as many as five in the second set and were trailing 14-10 before rallying to tie it 14-14 on Barbosa's serve. The Penguins took their first lead at 23-22 as part of a 4-0 run that gave them a 4-0 win. Reid and Ruth Boscaljon had back-to-back kills, and Barbosa came up with a solo block to set up Reid's kill on set point.
YSU carried the momentum to take a 8-5 lead in the third set before scored four straight and never trailed again. YSU got within one several times, including 24-23 on Haley Kapferer's kill. Nedeljkovic answered with her second kill of the match to give the Flames a 25-23 victory.
YSU led 8-4 in the fourth set before UIC took its first lead at 10-9 as part of a 7-1 run. The Penguins tied the score at 11 and 12 but never reclaimed the lead as UIC hung on to win 25-20.
The Penguins will play host to Loyola on Saturday at 2 p.m.
