Sweeps Penguins in Tightly-Contested
Match
Valparaiso,
Ind. -- The Youngstown State
volleyball team came up just short
in three close sets in a 3-0 loss to
Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon.
Ruth Boscaljon had 11 kills and five blocks while Haley
Kapferer had eight kills and three
blocks for YSU.
Angie Porche tallied a match-high 14 kills to lead Valparaiso
while Allison Sears finished with
11.
The Penguins led by as many as three at 10-7 in the first set
before Valpo scored four straight
points and never trailed again. The
Crusaders led 22-17 before YSU
scored four straight to get within
one, and they eventually won 25-23
after YSU staved off two set points.
Valpo hit just .042 in the set but
held the Penguins to a .000 effort.
Valpo never trailed in the second set and scored the final
three points to win 25-21. The
Crusaders led 17-11 before YSU's
late surge cut the margin to 22-21.
The Penguins jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the final set
but couldn't hold the lead in the
25-20 setback. Valpo tied the set at
10-10, and after falling behind
12-11, never trailed again. YSU
trailed just 21-19 after a kill by
Kapferer, but Valpo scored on four
of the final five rallies. All of
the points came on YSU errors - a
ball handling error, an attack
error, a blocking error and a set
error.
YSU concludes its four-match road stretch on Tuesday at 7
p.m. at Cleveland State. |
