Middle Hitters Lead Penguins to Three-Set Win Over CofC

Cincinnati -- Youngstown State senior middle hitters Ruth Boscaljon and Allison Heinz combined for 23 kills and a .450 hitting percentage as the Penguins defeated the College of Charleston in straight sets on Saturday morning at the Bearcats Invitational.

Allison HeinzAllison Heinz had 10 kills, registered a .500 attack percentage and tied her career high with eight blocks against the Cougars.

Heinz tied her career high with eight blocks, and Kaitlin O'Hara registered four as YSU finished with 10 as a team. The Penguins will play Evansville this evening at 5.

Freshman setter Angela Roidt added 31 assists in her first career start.

"I thought we played pretty well," head coach Joe Bonner said. "We were more aggressive with our serves, and that allowed us to control the net a little more. Our blockers really stood out."

Heinz had five kills and three blocks in the opening set as the Penguins won 25-20. Sarah Havel's seven kills gave the Cougars an edge in kills and hitting percentage, but the Penguins got three aces and benefitted from two Cougar serving errors and two more ball handling errors. YSU did not trail after scoring five straight to go up 5-2.

Boscaljon and Tasha Reid had four kills apiece, and the Cougars hit .000 in the second set as YSU won 25-20. YSU scored seven straight points to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 10-4 lead, and CofC never got closer than three the rest of the set.

A 9-1 run midway through the final set gave the Penguins an 18-7 lead, and they went on to a 25-16 victory in the finale. Boscaljon had seven of her kills in the set, and Heinz added three kills and three blocks.

The College of Charleston dropped to 1-4 this season. The Cougars went 27-7 in 2008.
