Penguins Rally From Two Sets Down Before Falling in Five at UIC

Chicago  -- The Youngstown State volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a tiebreaking fifth set, but the Penguins could not complete the comeback in a five-set loss to UIC on Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins lost 25-21 and 25-19 in the first two sets before winning the next two by identical 25-19 scores. UIC then jumped out to a 6-2 lead and hit .417 in the fifth set en route to a 15-8 victory.

Ruth Boscaljon had match highs with 20 kills and nine blocks, and Allison Heinz posted a career-high 17 kills. Kelsey Safranek had 17 kills, and Casie Sullivan had 16 to lead the Flames.

YSU outhit the Flames overall .231 to .222, and the Guins had two more kills and two more blocks. UIC, however, committed two fewer serving errors and had five more aces.

YSU dropped to 7-15 overall and 5-7 in Horizon League contests. UIC maintained its hold on fourth place in the standings, improving to 12-13 overall and 6-5 in the circuit. YSU defeated UIC in five sets when the teams met in Youngstown on Sept. 26.

The first set featured 10 ties and three lead changes before the Flames went up for good at 19-18. UIC went up 2-1 in the second set and did not trail the rest of the way.

The Penguins took control of the third set after four straight Boscaljon kills put them ahead 14-11. YSU hit .314 in the third set and .282 in the fourth, which it led every point after 2-1.

UIC scored the first four points of the fifth set and, after YSU got within 6-5, scored four straight points to seize control at 10-5.

YSU will return home to entertain Green Bay on Friday at 7 p.m.
