Exciting, Challenging
Home Schedule Highlights 2009-10 Women's
Basketball Slate
Youngstown --
The Youngstown State women's basketball
team will offer one of the most
attractive home schedules in recent
memory and play in two tournaments to
prepare for the 2009-10 Horizon League
slate, head coach Cindy Martin announced.
The four non-conference opponents that YSU will host at Beeghly
Center combined for 97 wins last season.
The Penguins' home opener will be against
Kent State (19-10 record last season) on
Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Canisius (24-9)
will come to campus on Nov. 22. YSU will
also welcome Pittsburgh (25-8) on Dec. 2
and Bowling Green (29-5) on Dec. 21.
"I'm proud to say that our ladies will be playing against four of
the best women's basketball teams in our
region right at the Beeghly Center,"
Martin said. "We have a very challenging
schedule this fall, and the first thing
we'll discuss at our first team meeting
is how our tough non-conference schedule
will pay off by the time we reach our
grueling Horizon League games.
"Our fans were fantastic last season, and we're looking forward to
playing these top competitors in front of
our home crowd."
Fans will certainly see some new faces wearing red and white as
eight new student-athletes will suit up
for the Penguins in 2009-10.
The Penguins will open their second season under Martin at the
Elon Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 13-14
against the host Phoenix and High Point.
Following the home games against Kent
State and Canisius, YSU will play in a
Thanksgiving tournament at UTEP against
the Miners, Weber State and the
University of Louisiana at Monroe.
The contest against Pittsburgh opens up a short, five-game
December slate. YSU plays at Akron on
Dec. 5, at Buffalo on Dec. 13 and at
Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 17 before
hosting Bowling Green on Dec. 21 to
conclude 2009.
"We decided to get on the road early this year and practice
traveling to prepare us for our three-day
Horizon League road trips," Martin said.
"I will always make a strong commitment
to ensure our ladies miss as few classes
as possible in the non-conference
schedule, and I'm proud to say that
they'll miss just two days of school the
entire fall semester."
Following an 11-day layoff, the Penguins will play its first of
nine games in January on Jan. 2 in their
Horizon League opener against Milwaukee
at the Beeghly Center. Defending
conference champion Green Bay will come to town on
Jan. 4 for YSU's only Monday game of the
regular season.
YSU will play five of its next seven games on the road, beginning
with a trip to Chicago to play UIC on
Jan. 7 and Loyola on Jan. 9. The Guins
host Valparaiso on Jan. 14 and Butler on
Jan. 16 before playing at Cleveland State
on Jan. 23, at Detroit on Jan. 28 and at
Wright State on Jan. 30.
Five of the Penguins' seven games in February will be played at
home, starting with Loyola on Feb. 4 and
UIC on Feb. 6. YSU plays at Butler on
Feb. 11 and at Valparaiso on Feb. 13
before returning home to host Cleveland
State on Feb. 20, Wright State on Feb. 25
and Detroit on Feb. 27.
YSU's regular season will wrap up in Wisconsin with games at Green
Bay on March 4 and at Milwaukee on March
6. The opening round of the 2010 Horizon
League Women's Basketball Championship is
set for March 8, and the title game will
be March 14. |
