Buzek Leads Men to Overall Victory at Mel Brodt Invitational
    Bowling Green, Ohio -- Senior Nick Buzek finished third with a time of 26:01 to lead three top-10 YSU finishers as the Youngstown State men's cross country team won the Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday.
    Nick Kruse finished fourth in 26:12 while Nick Smith placed seventh in 26:31 for the Penguins, who were competing in their season-opening meet. Emily Cicero led the women's squad to a seventh-place finish with an 11th-place time of 19:23.
    "It was a tremendous opening meet for us to get a big W in a meet like this," head coach Brian Gorby said. "It was also a positive that the women beat a Horizon League team in Cleveland State."
    R.D. Goodright placed fourth for the men and 16th overall with a time of 27:17 while Dave Mealy rounded out the scorers with a time of 27:34. Freshman Dan Nemergut and sophomore J.D. Sheppard finished 28th and 29th respectively. The win marked YSU's second win an as many trips to Bowling Green as the team won the Bowling Green Invitational last season.
    Senior Gina Mavrikis finished two spots behind Cicero in 13th place with a personal-best time of 19:41 and Amy Moore ran a personal-best 21:31 to place 50th. Marielle Glanz finished 58th with a time of 22:10 while freshman Genevieve Jerome placed 71st in 23:26 to round out the scorers.
    The Penguins will take a week off before traveling to Penn State to compete in the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 24.
