Cicero, Seniors Look to Carry Women's
Cross Country Squad in 2005
The 2005 edition of Youngstown State’s women’s cross country
team will have a balance of
experience and youth as it will
return four runners from last
season’s squad that placed fourth at
the Horizon League Championship.
Joining them will be a set of six
newcomers that includes two seniors
who are track and field veterans but
are new to cross country.
Three-time All-Horizon League selection Emily Cicero
headlines the three-member senior
class while Boardman native Gina
Mavrikis and Canfield’s Debbie
Breunig will also be competing in
their final seasons.
Cicero returned from a redshirt season in 2003 to have a
junior campaign in which she
finished first for the red and white
in every meet. She finished sixth at
the Horizon League Championship to
earn First-Team All-Horizon League
honors and extended YSU’s streak of
having a first-team all-conference
finisher in each of its four years
in the League. The senior Napoleon,
Ohio, native also owns the
second-best mark in school history
in the 6K and the fourth-best mark
in the 5K.
Mavrikis came on strong at the end of last season to score in
the final five meets and finished a
career-best 24th at the Horizon
League Championship. She also had a
quick start to this season with a
personal-best time at the Mel Brodt
Invitational. Breunig also posted
her best career finish at the league
meet last season and set
personal-best times in both the 5K
and 6K.
Junior Marielle Glanz will be looking to continue on her
solid sophomore as the only other
returnee on the squad. Last season
she scored in every meet and ran the
third-fastest 6K time in school
history in the last meet of the
season.
Seniors Estee Rogers and Cassandra Smith will look to make a
smooth transition from track and
field to cross country. Both
athletes competed in the heptathlon
last season, and Smith is a former
second-team all-conference selection
in the 4x400m relay.
Rounding out the squad will be redshirt freshman Shantel
Jackson and true freshmen Amy Moore,
Genevieve Jerome and Madelyn McGhee.
The Penguins will have four more meets before competing in
the Horizon League Championship on
Oct. 29 in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
They will compete in their second
meet of the season tomorrow at the
Spiked Shoe Invitational before
traveling to the Notre Dame
Invitational on Sept. 30. The
All-Ohio Invitational will be held
on Oct. 7 in Delaware, Ohio, and the
Penn State National Invitational
will be Oct. 15. The NCAA Great
Lakes Regional will be Nov. 12 in
Bloomington, Ind. |
