Interested In Joining If you are interested in joining the ASCE, ask an officer or attend one of our meetings. About ASCE Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 133,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society. ASCE's vision is to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life. Our heritage enables us to benefit from the experience of those who have preceded us. This is the value of history in any field or endeavor. Our heritage also enables us to enjoy and receive inspiration from the accomplishments of the past, great and small, and gives us a stronger tie with the people who created them Chapter History The student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Youngstown State University has demonstrated a reputation of excellence on the local, regional, and national levels through its active members since it was chartered in 1960. We have participated in university-sponsored events such as Math Counts (a junior high school math competition) as well as Homecoming and Engineers' Week festivities. On the regional level, we have competed in the ASCE-sponsored Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Competitions for over 20 years and boast numerous first place titles. Youngstown State University has hosted the Ohio Valley Regional Conference of ASCE Student Chapters in 1985, 1993, and 2008. Each May, the Student Chapter organizes and hosts the monthly meeting of the local Parent Chapter (Youngstown Branch) of ASCE. ASCE at YSU has also received national recognition for their annual reports submitted to headquarters located in New York City every February. Our student chapter would not be able to perform on such a high level were it not for our dedicated advisors. Dr. Gilbert Williamson (1967-1972), Dr. Jack Bakos (1972-1987), and Dr. Scott Martin (1987-2010) have supported ASCE in its endeavors, and we are grateful for their time and devotion to our chapter.
