International Friends  - Welcome to Our Country We Extend Our Hand of Friendship…

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS

As an International student…You have worked very hard and have made many sacrifices to be able to attend college in the United States. You may have come to YSU to learn how to speak English more fluently so you can go on to study your major. You may have, by necessity, left your family and friends behind in order to come to the U.S. and work on an advanced degree. You may need to be very careful with your money due to limited finances. We know that whatever sacrifices and hardships you have endured, you have made it here. CONGRATULATIONS!

As an International student, you have one thing in common with every other International student: you are in a foreign country with many strange customs, holidays, expressions and foods.

Would you like to have an American Friend?

Many International students find the adjustment to life in the United States much easier if they have an American friend to talk to and spend time with. This is why the people at Chi Alpha would like to reach out and offer you the opportunity to be paired with an American who would like to be your friend.

WHAT WOULD AN AMERICAN FRIEND DO?

Your American Friend could:

*  Help you with your English
*  Explain American customs and holidays
*  Be someone you can call on
*  Invite you to their home (this is not a live-in situation) Knowing that students have very little free time, you and your Friend could have a meal together or whatever else you would normally do.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR FRIEND?

Your American Friend will call you and meet with you as long as you are at
Youngstown State University

Your American Friend has a sincere desire to get to know you and learn about your country. Some of our American Friend volunteers are single, some are students, some are married and have children.

All of our American volunteers have learned about the special needs of International students and are eager to begin their Friendship.
How do you apply to become a Friend?

To be paired up with an American Friend, please send an email with your contact information to Chuck Draa. We will contact you with more information as soon as we receive your email.
