With the introduction in 1998 of a specially designed Tech Prep Computer Technology program, Mahoning County JVS Adult Education has taken a leadership role in developing Tech Prep for adult students. The essential skills taught in this one-year program include: the basics of Windows; Netscape; Microsoft Office software applications; HTML and web page development; programming languages; network architecture and design; business math, and English.

What are the Tech Prep career steps?
· Step One: Earn a certificate in Computer Technology at Mahoning County CTC. Complete an unpaid supervised externship in a local business.
· Step Two: Participate in programs designed for the adult student at Youngstown State University.
· Step Three:
Enter a 99-quarter credit associate degree program at YSU in computer information systems, office information systems or computer engineering technology.

For what jobs will I be preparing?
· Computer Information Specialist: Supports data systems and related facilities for processing and retrieving business information.
· Programming and Applications Specialist: Applies software theory and programming methods to the solution of business data problems.
· Microcomputer Applications Specialist: Understands software applications and helps the end user.
· Network Systems Technician:
Installs and supports computer networks.
· Computer Support Technician: Assists in evaluation and support of current and future software and office systems equipment needs based on user requirements.

How will I earn a college degree?

Students who successfully complete the MCJVS Tech Prep Computer Technology program will be ready for admission to YSU. At YSU students will follow a 99-credit pathway leading to an associate degree. Students may attend YSU on a full- or part-time basis. Many employers will assist with college tuition for their employees. These associate degree courses may be used toward requirements for bachelor's degree programs.
