Spring Commencement

Information for Graduates

Cap & Gown Distribution will be held on Wednesday, April 18 in the new YSU Barnes & Noble Bookstore from 8 am to 6 pm. 

Please see the following information for your cap & gown pick-up time on Wednesday, April 18:

The undergraduate and graduate levels from the Williamson College of Business Administration, Beeghly College of Education, and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics can pick up their caps & gowns between the hours of 8:00 am - 12:30 pm.

The undergraduate and graduate levels from the College of Creative Arts and Communication, Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences can pick up their caps & gowns between the hours of 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm.

Please note that caps and gowns will also be available on Thursday, April 19 from 8 am - 6 pm. 

Caps and gowns must be picked up during the specified dates and times. If the scheduled times conflict with your class/test/work schedule, a friend or family member may pick up your cap and gown during the specified dates/times. In no case should you plan to obtain your cap and gown on days other than those listed below. Please check for proper fit. Exchanges may be made only on the dates and times listed above.

Please Note: Caps and gowns that have not been picked up are returned to the manufacturer after Commencement. If you delay your graduation, you will need to reorder your cap and gown.

Dark clothing and dark shoes should be worn under the robes. Please do not bring book bags, purses, or other items you will need to carry.

TICKETS: There are no tickets necessary for this ceremony.

PARKING: Free parking is available for you and your guests in University lots and parking decks. (Campus Map)

ARRIVAL AT BEEGHLY CENTER: Plan to arrive arrive at Beeghly Physical Education Center by 1 hour prior to the ceremony. Please obtain a program as you enter the building.

ROBING: The instruction sheet you receive at cap and gown pick-up identifies robing areas. Immediately upon arriving, go to the robing area designated for the degree you will receive and put on your cap and gown. If you are listed on the University Honors page in the program, follow the instructions for honor graduates.

GRADUATION HONORS: Names of tentative honor graduates will be announced in the printed program. Transfer students, please remember: Baccalaureate degree candidates with less than 60 s.h. at YSU and associate degree candidates with less than 40 s.h. at YSU are ineligible for graduation honors. Your honor designation should appear on the reader card you receive as you line up. Honor cords are distributed with caps and gowns. Please note: Master and Doctoral candidates do not receive honors.

LINEUP FOR PROCESSION: Form lines according to written instructions given to you. Faculty marshals will be available to assist.

PROCESSION: The  ceremony processions will begin at 9:30 am sharp (Williamson College of Business Administration; Beeghly College of Education; and College of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) and 2:30 pm sharp (College of Creative Arts and Communication; Bitonte College of Health and Human Services; and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.)  If you arrive late, we can not guarantee that you will be able to participate in the procession.

DIPLOMAS: Diplomas will not be available at Commencement and will be mailed.

PHOTOGRAPHS: A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate as he/she receives his/her diploma. Proofs and a price list should be mailed to the graduate within two weeks of graduation. Graduates may receive information from several agencies, however, GradImages is the only photography company contracted by YSU to provide this service to our graduates. To contact them, please call 1-800-261-2576 or email giservice@gradimages.net. Designated photo areas are available for guests who wish to take pictures during the ceremony. Video cameras are allowed.

ATTENDANCE: All graduating students are requested to be present at Commencement.

NOTICE: In keeping with the dignity of the occasion and respect for other graduates, alcoholic beverages will not be permitted in Beeghly Center nor will displays of inappropriate behavior be tolerated. Marshals have been alerted to take whatever actions are necessary.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: Youngstown State University is committed to accommodating people with special needs. Please let your guests know that the first few rows of each seating section will be utilized for handicapped and accessible seating only. In order to accommodate as many people as possible, if your guests require seating in those areas, please ask them to limit the number of people sitting with them.
