Monday - Thursday, 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. (you may work all 4 days, or any combination)

$8.00 per hour - October through May

Upward Bound at Youngstown State University is seeking an Instructional Tutor for their After School Instructional Tutoring program (A.S.I.T.). Upward Bound serves college - bound high school students from the Youngstown City School District. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which potential first-generation college bound students and students with a financial need enroll and graduate from college. To achieve this goal, Upward Bound provides academic support and enrichment services. The purpose of the after school instructional tutoring program is to assist students in earning a C or above in all core college preparatory courses, earn a GPA of 3.0 or above, and pass all sections of the Ohio Graduation Test.

Job Title: Upward Bound After School Instructional Tutor

Purpose: Provide tutoring and study skills instruction for High School students individually or in small groups in Foreign Language (Spanish & French), English, Mathematics, or Science

Dates: TBA

Location: Youngstown City High Schools: Chaney and East

Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M.

Rate: Hourly: $8.00

Reports to: Upward Bound Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Provide guided instruction based on the Youngstown City Schools Pacing Guides in content area/s (Math, Science, English , Foreign Language)
  • Instruct students in developing learning, time management, study, and test preparation skills
  • Tutor students in preparation for the Ohio Graduation Test
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups
  • Complete and submit program reports and updates to appropriate coordinator by deadlines
  • Plan and facilitate subject review daily
  • Assist students in reviewing concepts, comprehending content, and clarifying difficulties with assignments
  • Provide assistance for students in developing, maintaining, and enhancing study habits
  • Attend training/orientation and staff meeting as assigned
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for minors
  • Monitor student achievement and develop new challenges for student prior to each meeting

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Current YSU student with a current GPA of 2.5 in area of study desired to tutor
  • Experience in Peer Mentoring, Reading and Study Skill tutor, or departmental tutor preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with participant population
  • Sensitivity to students from diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • Patience and ability to communicate effectively to clearly explain subject matter to students

Note: Tutoring is held on site at the high school – transportation will be needed.
