How I got to YSU.
For me, the college choice was easy—I would attend YSU.
My reasons were simple: I planned on majoring in chemical
engineering and YSU had a great program; I wanted to commute
because I did not have the money to live on campus; and I
wanted a quality education for a great price. As it turned
out, YSU offered me a full academic ride with room and board
so I could live on campus and not have to worry about student
loans.
YSU also allowed me the flexibility in my schedule I needed
to coach cross country at a local high school. It was through
coaching that I realized my true passion was education, so
I changed my major. Even better is the fact that YSU also
has an awesome education program. You never know what path
life will lead you down, but one thing I can say for certain
is that Youngstown State University is a great place to begin
the next segment of that journey after high school.
What surprised you most about YSU?
I was surprised at how much the faculty care about you. Most
of my classes were small, but even in a lecture hall the professor
called everyone by name. I have been impressed with the quality
of the education I’m getting here.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishments at
YSU?
I’m proud to have done well in the University Scholars
program. It’s been a humbling experience, too—being
around so many intelligent people. I’ve accomplished
a lot in my four years here, and I’m looking forward
to taking on the challenge of teaching.
What about the future?
In addition to teaching high school chemistry and other sciences,
I plan to get my master’s in chemistry at YSU. Eventually,
I want to go on for a doctorate in science education, so I
can help train the next generation of science teachers.
