Announces 2008Alumni Award Winners
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Warren P. Williamson, Jr. College of Business Administration (WCBA) at Youngstown State University announces the recipients of 2008 WCBA Outstanding Alumnus Awards. The recipients will be honored at the 13th Annual WCBA Alumni Banquet at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.
The Outstanding Business Alumnus Award will be presented to Stephen Bartolin of Colorado Springs, CO, chairman, president and CEO of the BROADMOOR. After graduating with a BSBA in 1975 Bartolin held management positions at The Greenbrier supervising Golf Operations, the Front Office, Reservations, Food and Beverage, Conference Services, and Sales. He was director of convention services for Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN for the next five years and then returned to Greenbrier as general manager. Bartolin was appointed president of the BROADMOOR in Colorado Springs, CO in 1991. After being promoted to President and CEO Bartolin was later appointed to the chairman, president, and CEO of the BROADMOOR, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company, the BROADMOOR Development Company,and the Cog Land and Development Company.
Bartolin also serves as on the Board of Directors for The Oklahoma Publishing Company, the Penrose St. Frances Health Systems, and the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
Bartolin became a member of the YSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987 and was named Resort Executive of the year, North America in 1997. He was named YSU Penguin of the Year in 1999 and received his honorary doctorate from YSU in 2005. Bartolin was named Colorado Hotelier of the Year in 2005. He graduated from YSU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 1975.
Catherine Mott, CEO and Founder of BlueTree Capital Group and BlueTree Allied Angels in Wexford, PA, will be recognized as Outstanding MBA Alumna. She has been a speaker at national and regional conferences and has been featured in many professional industry publications such as Red Herring, The New York Times, and FanFare, and as one of the few women who represent the industry of angel capital/venture capital.
Previously she founded Synergetics Sales Performance Group (formerly Strategic Sales Solutions) and Indigo Capital Development, LLC. In 2002, she was recognized as one of Pennsylvania’s 50 Best Women in Business; and in December 2003, Ms. Mott was presented on the website for the National Education Center for Women in Business as the featured entrepreneur of the month.
Prior to forming her own businesses, Catherine worked 17 years in corporate banking management where she served in senior management roles for investment sales/wealth management, commercial lending, business development, and retail expansion.
Catherine holds an M.B.A. from Youngstown State University, a B.S. in Education and a Masters Degree in Education from Edinboro State University.
Joseph Smith, account director for the Office of National Drug Control Policy for Draftfcb in New York, will be named the WCBA Outstanding Recent Alumnus. As a account director he oversees the parent-focused social marketing campaign against teen drug abuse, lead a geographically targeted campaign against meth use, and managed the African American, Hispanic, and Native American ad campaigns with partner agencies. Prior to Draftfcb he worked as an account supervisor increasing brand awareness with Transitions Optical for Saatchi & Saatchi Consumer Health Wellness and as an account supervisor increasing sales and launching integrated campaigns with American Standard Trane for Foot Cone and Belding, both in New York.
In 2004 Smith worked as an account director and executive for Samsung Electronics where he produced global campaigns for wireless phones, plasma and LCD TVs, and sponsorship of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He was also an account executive for New Business: Qwest & American Standard and JP Morgan Chase, Small Business Banking.
In addition to his work experience, he volunteers with Free Arts NYC mentoring young “buddies” who grow up in the city with no chance to visit museums or Central Park. In addition, Smith freely offers his expertise to Citymeals-on-Wheels that ensures no elderly New Yorker will ever go a day without food or human company. Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1999.
Martin R. Kubic, CPA of Canfield, senior deputy auditor/chief auditor for the Youngstown Region, Office of the Auditor of the State of Ohio, will receive the Outstanding Service Award. He graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1975.
Kubic has shared his talents with the Office of the Auditor in many capacities over the past 32 years. He began his duties as a staff auditor, and was then promoted to Quality Control for the Youngstown District. He later became a Field Audit Supervisor and was later promoted to District Audit Manager which extended his responsibilities to include the overall operation of the Youngstown District which included the counties of Ashtabula and Geauga counties. As Senior Deputy Auditor/Chief Auditor he is responsible for the overall operation of the Youngstown Region which consists of seven counties including Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Jefferson, Harrison, Portage, and Carroll.
Kubic is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Ohio Government Finance Officers Association. He is a dedicated volunteer and member of Youngstown State University’s Accounting and Finance Department’s Advisory Committee and an honorary member of Beta Alpha Psi. Kubic has been a speaker for WCBA’s annual Business 2020 and serves as a dedicated mentor to many of the accounting interns employed at the Auditor’s Office. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1975.
