Youngstown Early College, a safe and nurturing environment, will provide students with the opportunity to aquire college credits while earning their high school diploma. Students will be encouraged to become lifelong learners and leaders in their communities.
A Unique Opportunity...
The Youngstown Early College is an exciting opportunity for students beginning the ninth grade to participate in combined high school-college experience with the goal of earning a high school diploma and up to 60 hours of college credit towards either a two or four year college degree.
Youngstown Early College (YES), is a collaboration between the Youngstown City School Distrcit (YCSD) and Youngstown State University (YSU). Faculty and support staff from both institutions work together as an instructional team in this partnership.
Where will the Early College be?
Youngstown Early College will be housed in Fedor Hall (former Elm Street school) on the YSU campus and is one of eight of its kind in the state of Ohio. These will join the ranks of over sixty other Early College High Schools around the country.
Outstanding high school teachers from the YCSD teach the four basic subject areas: Science, English, math, and Social Studies. The YEC will be supported by a Mentoring Center and Health Clinic. All early college related courses and services are offered to the students free of charge.
Benefits...
While students recieve intese academic instruction, they also experience community-based learning activities including service learning, extensive job shadowing, and critical problem solving in corprate settings. The YEC stresses four years of cirriculum which is mindful of RIGOR, RELEVENCE, and RELATIONSHIPS.
As they become prepared, students enroll in courses on the YSU campus to fulfill requirements for high school graduation and to gain college credit. The YEC also has an extensive Service Learning component. Our students and faculty become actively involved in many forms of public service activities throughout the community.
