Welcome to the Center for International Studies and Programs! The Center is an integral part of the Academic Affairs Division of YSU. We strive to serve as a focal point for the university’s many international initiatives, including international exchange agreements, faculty international development, and matters of international policy. In particular, the Center is responsible for the following programs and services:

  • International Student and Scholar Programs, including recruitment, orientation, support services, and activities, as well as compliance with federal regulations concerning international students and scholars

  • Study Abroad Programs, including advising students on the countless opportunities to add an international dimension to their YSU educational experiences

  • English Language Institute, offering English as a Second Language classes to students preparing to enroll in an academic program, as well as for members of the Youngstown community who desire to improve their fluency in English

Please use the navigation bar on the left to explore our many programs and services described in these web pages.

Instructional costs for Graduate International cut by 40%!     The cost for international students to enroll in graduate-level classes at Youngstown State University has been significantly reduced under a plan approved by the YSU Board of Trustees. Like most public universities in the U.S., YSU charges international students (and other out-of-state students) a tuition surcharge. At YSU, this surcharge dropped from $244.29 per credit in 2006-2007 to just $8.34 per credit beginning in the 2007-2008 academic year. As a result, the cost for international students to enroll in graduate-level classes at YSU is 40 percent lower beginning in fall semester 2007.

Number of YSU Students
Studying Abroad Doubles
158 YSU students went abroad this year as part of their academic programs, up from 73 the previous year. Even more striking is that the number of students on individualized programs–those enrolling in overseas program for a summer term, semester, or academic year–more than tripled from 9 to 32 students, and spring term rose by more than 600% over the previous year.

Resch Foundation gives
$40K for Study Abroad Opportunities

Students with significant financial need can still pursue a study abroad program through the generosity of the Resch foundation. Grants are a minimum of $2,000 and can pay for the entire study abroad program, which will put international study well in reach of Pell-eligible students.

Popular activities for international students include the YSU International Friend-Family Dinner (above left) and intramural soccer (above right).
