Laptop Computer Safety
Laptop computers are in hot demand by thieves throughout the country so please use a little common sense when bringing your laptop computer to the YSU campus. Here are a few tips to help you keep your laptop and not become prey to a sneaky criminal.
Safety Tips
1. Never leave your laptop computer unattended in any public location (i.e. classrooms, the library, study lounges, public benches, or in a locker).
2. Always securely lock offices or dorm rooms where the laptop is stored.
3. If possible use a security device, such as steel cable locks, security plates or alarms, to secure your laptop computer. Your local computer store sells a number of security devices. Also, the laptop manufacturer may recommend and sell security devices on their own website.
4. Always contact the police in the event of a theft immediately.
5. Keep a copy of the serial number in a safe place that is easily accessible in the event of a theft.
6. Homeowners insurance may cover the loss of your laptop outside the home (contact your agent or insurance company for more information). People living in apartments should consider getting renters insurance.
We cannot guarantee that these prevention techniques will prevent the theft of a laptop computer but anything you do to make it harder for a thief to steal will help.
