Youngstown State University Word Mark banner  2003: a year in review

President David C. Sweet

Dear Friends:

For Youngstown State University, 2003 was an outstanding year. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of faculty members and staff, YSU experienced many "firsts" and "bests."

For the first time in history, a YSU professor was selected as Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Ohio Professor of the Year. Among 178 colleges and universities in the state, Sherry Linkon of the English Department and the Center for Working-Class Studies stood out as the state's best professor.

Excellence in teaching at YSU was also recognized by the Northeast Ohio Council on Education, a professional service organization for higher education, and Ohio magazine.

Further, we experienced our seventh consecutive semester enrollment increase, opened the $22 million, 408-student University Courtyard Apartments in Smoky Hollow, obtained the university’s first prestigious Kresge Challenge Grant for the Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center campaign and saw an unprecedented amount of external grants in the amount of $5.895 million obtained by faculty members.

So it is with pleasure that I summarize our notable achievements. These accomplishments show why I believe that Youngstown State University is the best public university in Northeast Ohio and beyond to obtain an undergraduate degree and among the best universities to pursue selected graduate and professional degrees.

Sincerely,

David C. Sweet, President
Youngstown State University
