Home of YSU Men's and Women's Basketball and Volleyball

The Beeghly Physical Education Center serves as the home for the Youngstown State University men's and women's basketball programs as well as the women's volleyball program. Beeghly Center is located on the northwest end of YSU's scenic downtown campus and comprises part of the Penguins' on-campus athletic venues.
In May 2002, the facility underwent more than $2.5 million in renovations. Including a new front and rear lobby and new hallways and locker rooms. Also a new $150,000 sound system was added to the arena. Prior to the 2000-01 season, the court was repainted, two additional scoreboards were added and expanded press-row seating was created.
Beeghly Center was dedicated on Dec. 23, 1972, when the YSU Penguins, under Hall of Fame coach Dom Rosselli, played host to Ohio University.
The multipurpose facility includes an Olympic-sized swimming and diving facility, racquetball and squash courts, classrooms, and administrative offices. Beeghly is also home to the men's and women's basketball offices as well as the Olympic sports offices. Beeghly Center was built at a cost of $5.5 million in 1972 and was dedicated in the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Leon A. Beeghly, founders of the Standard Slag Company in Youngstown. Last year (2001-02), the facility celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
The original seating capacity of 6,000 was altered prior to the 1983-84 college basketball season by adding permanent seats at both ends of the court and 1,260 chairback  seats at mid-court. The facility has a current capacity of 6,500 for basketball seating.
In addition to YSU intercollegiate basketball and volleyball contests, as well as university events, Beeghly Center has served as the site for high school competitions, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) matches, concerts, tradeshows, and numerous other functions that dot the busy facility schedule throughout the year.
On September 15, 1996, YSU dedicated Veterans' Plaza directly in front of Beeghly Center. This $500,000 community project was funded in-part through private donations to honor all United States Veterans.
