Men's Basketball Visits Maryland For First-Ever Meeting
Two 600-win coaches square off when
the Youngstown State men’s
basketball team visits ACC-member
Maryland, Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the
Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
YSU’s Jerry
Slocum enters the game with 610
career victories while Maryland’s
Gary Williams has won 605 career
games. Slocum and Williams are just
two of eight current Division I
coaches with at least 600 career
victories. The contest will be aired
live on NewsRadio 570 WKBN.
TIPOFF NOTES
❑ This is the first meeting
between Youngstown State and
Maryland. This is also the first
time Youngstown State will play a
member of the Atlantic Coast
Conference since falling to Georgia
Tech, 105-85, on Dec. 29, 1992. YSU
is 0-2 when facing an ACC opponent.
The Guins also lost to Clemson,
104-74, on Jan. 18, 1989.
❑ Youngstown State senior Jack
Liles has played in 83 consecutive
games, dating back to the 2005-06
season. Liles, who has played in 89
career games, needs 381 points, 94
rebounds and 16 blocks to become the
first player in school history to
reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and
100
blocks in a career. Liles also ranks
third all-time with 84 career
blocked shots.
❑ With two 3-pointers against
Maryland, sophomore Vytas Sulskis
will become the third fastest player
to reach 50 career 3-pointers in
school history. Sulskis will have
reached 50 triples in 32 games.
Elmer Brown was the quickest to 50
career treys. He accomplished the
feat in just 24 games in 1998-99.
Tilman Bevely reached 50 in just 25
games in 1986-87.
❑ Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum is coaching in his 996th career game against the Terrapins. Slocum will coach his 1,000th career game when the Guins host Valparaiso on Dec. 4, at the Beeghly Center.

Terrapins are members of the
Atlantic Coast Conference and won
the 2002 NCAA Division I National

❑ Maryland returns 10
letterwinners and three starters
from last season’s 19-15 team that
made
the second round of the National
Invitational Tournament. The
Terrapins defeated Bucknell, 81-52,
on Friday, Nov. 14, to open the
season. Landon Milbourne led four
players scoring in double figures
with 16 points against Bucknell.
Cliff Tucker posted 14 points while
Greivis Vasquez added
13 points and Adrian Bowie added 12.
❑ Maryland Head Coach Gary
Williams is in his 20th season as
the head coach of the Terrapins and
owns a record of 398-215. Overall,
Williams is in his 31st season as a
college head coach and owns a career
mark of 605-343.

The Penguins return home to host
Allegheny, Saturday, Nov. 22. Tipoff
is slated for 7:35 p.m. at the

MARTIN IMPRESSIVE IN DEBUT
Junior forward Sirlester Martin
became just the second player in YSU
Division I history to post a
double-double in his fi rst game
with the Penguins. Martin recorded
14 points and 11 rebounds against
Buffalo last Friday. The only other
player to record a double-double in
his first game as a Penguins was
Rickey Tunstall against Columbia (16
points, 11 rebounds) in 1982. Martin
is also just the fourth player to
start a season with a double-double.
The other two were Tilman Bevely (23
pts., 10 reb.) against Marist in
1987 and Tim Jackson (18 pts., 14
reb.)
against Slippery Rock in 1989.
MARYLAND TIES
Senior Jack Liles and junior Kelvin
Bright are both natives of the state
of Maryland. Liles, a 6-foot-7
forward, is from Odenton, Md., while
the 6-foot-4 guard Bright hails from
Silver Spring, Md.

A BRIGHT FUTURE
Junior Kelvin Bright displayed his
scoring prowess in the Guins’ season
opener against Buffalo last Friday.
Bright scored a career-high 11
points in his Youngstown State
debut.
SIX NEWCOMERS MAKE DEBUT
Six of Youngstown State seven
newcomers made their Division I
debuts with Youngstown State against
Buffalo. Juniors Dallas Blocker,
Kelvin Bright, Sirlester Martin,
DeAndre Mays, Tom Parks and Ashen
Ward all played in their first game
at YSU.
CHARITABLE COOKSEY
Sophomore Vance Cooksey was almost
automatic from the charity stripe
last season. Cooksey led the
Penguins with a .797 free-throw
percentage, making 55-of-69
attempts. Cooksey was
also the only player on the squad to
shoot over 70 percent from the
free-throw line.
GUINS SIGN ALL-STATER LAMAR
MCKNIGHT
Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced
that Lamar McKnight, a Division IV
Third-Team All-Ohio selection, has
signed a National Letter of Intent
during the early signing period to
join the Youngstown State men’s
basketball program.
McKnight, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound
forward from Bedford St. Peter
Chanel High School, averaged a
double-double as a junior with 17
points and 10 rebounds per game
while leading Chanel to the Division
IV state Final Four. McKnight also
posted three blocks per game and
shot more than 50 percent from the
field.
A three-time All-North Coast League First-Team selection, McKnight scored a game-high 31 points in a regional final victory over Malvern and posted 23 points and 14 rebounds in a state-semifinal loss to Sugarcreek Garaway.
