Welcome Letter to Prospective Recruits | PDF
Dear Prospective Recruit,
Thank you for your interest in Youngstown State University
Athletics. At YSU, our coaches and staff work diligently to provide our
student-athletes with the best competitive advantages to succeed athletically
and academically. Our University provides a challenging curriculum to help
students prepare for life after college.
The mission of the YSU Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is to offer broad-based programs which accommodate the needs and
interests of student-athletes. We are committed to: the welfare of the
student-athletes; academic integrity, sportsmanship and ethical integrity by
student-athletes, staff and boosters; fiscal integrity; diversity of
student-athletes and staff; gender equity; and community outreach.
We have been privileged to enjoy a tremendous amount of
success on the playing fields and in the classroom from our four-time football
national championships and 16 track/cross country conference championships to
our many Academic All-American and All-District honorees. Most recent successes
include our 2008 Women’s Golf Medalist Katie Rogner, our 2008 Women’s Indoor and
Outdoor Track Championships, our 2005 and 2006 Missouri Valley Football
Conference Championships, and our 2006 Horizon League Softball Championship,
propelling us to our first NCAA softball tournament.
We continue to improve on our academic excellence as our
graduation rates for those who exhaust eligibility is at an all-time high of
93%; the most recent academic report has 11 of our varsity teams with a team gpa
of 3.00 or higher; and 56% of our student-athletes had a semester gpa of at
least a 3.00! YSU garnered four CoSida Academic All-District honorees in
addition to our 18 Academic All-Conference selections during the past year.
YSU Athletics is committed to ensuring our student-athletes
understand that being a collegiate student-athlete is both a privilege as well
as great opportunity and giving back to the community is an important education
tool we use to demonstrate that philosophy. Our students and staff annually
participate in over 100 community events, serving over 10,000 patrons.
Finally, as a University, Youngstown State offers over 100
undergraduate programs backed by a strong tradition of teaching and research.
Youngstown State’s seven accredited colleges include The College of Liberal Arts
and Social Sciences, The Warren P. Williamson College of Business, The Beeghly
College of Education, The College of Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics, The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services and The Graduate
School of Studies.
It is with sincere hope that you find Youngstown State
University the place to further your education so that you can become a part of
the winning tradition that is Penguin Athletics.
Sincerely,
Ron Strollo
Executive Director of
Intercollegiate Athletics
