Cross Country Finishes Strong in Final Meet Before Horizon League Championships
Bowling Green, Ohio. -- The Youngstown State women's cross country team took fifth place, while the men's squad finished sixth at Bowling Green Falcon Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The women's squad beat Horizon League Foes Cleveland State and Detroit at the event, and were led by sophomore Kayla Witmer and junior Lauren Blase.
Witmer finished the 6k course with a time of 22:56, finishing in 12th place. Witmer's time was in the Top 10 all-time best in a 6k race. Blase finished in 21st the event, with at time of 23:18.
In 51st was junior Lisa Lee who finished with a time of 24:31. Six spots behind her in 57th was freshman Jocelyn Steiner. Steiner finished the event with a time of 24:44. Senior Madelyn McGhee rounded out the Penguin scoring with a time of 25:14 and a 68th place finish.
Junior Dawn Goodwin finished in 70th, with a time of 25:20. Sophomore Kelcie Witmer ran a time of 25:36, good for 75th. Right behind Witmer in 76th was junior Jen Roman, who ran a time of 25:38. Senior Amy Moore finished in 82nd, following a time of 26:11.
In the past three weeks the women's
team has beaten UIC, Wright State,
Green Bay, Detroit, and Cleveland
State.
It was a day of personal best for the men's squad as all five
scorers finished with a personal
best 8k time. The squad was led by
sophomore Jake Lape who ran an 8k
time of 25:50 and finished in 19th.
Lape improved his personal best time
by 40 seconds at the meet. The
second Penguin to finish was junior
Justin Dickman. Dickman finished in
23rd, running a 26:00, his personal
best time.
Senior JD Sheppard finished the event in 26th after running a 26:05. With that time, Sheppard improved his personal best time by 55 seconds. In 28th was sophomore Jim Ramson with a time of 26:12. Ramson improved his personal best time by 20 seconds. The final scorer for the men's squad was sophomore Joe Copploe. Copploe improved his personal best time by 40 seconds after running a 26:37 and finishing 41st.
The men's team gap was down 47 seconds from 1:30 last week at the All-Ohio Championships.
Also competing for the men was freshman Rick Lape, sophomore Scott Denham, senior Dan Nemergut, sophomore Harold Jones, and sophomore Jerome Jeffrey.
Lape ran a time of 27:26, finishing
in 57th. Denham finished the event
in 63rd, with a time of 27:45.
Nemergut was 78th at the event after
running a 28:32. Jones finished 84th
with a time of 29:09. Jeffrey
finished in 92nd after running a
29:55.
Both squads will return to action on Nov. 1st at the Horizon
League Championships in Green Bay,
Wis.
